just taken the bike into the my local dealer after it started making a noise from the rear wheel,it turns out its the crown wheel bearing is shot this is a bit of a surprize as its only done 22000 has anyone else had the same problem??.the bearing runs in oil so is well lubed the dealers answer was well bearings do fail (not realy an answer in my opinion)

I've just taken mine out of the FD of my 1150 GSA... What i found was that it was not shimmed appropriately from the factory. All of the wear was on the outer 1/3 of the crown gear. Once I start putting it back together I'll decide on, order and replace old shims with the correct size new shims. This will solve, hopefully, most future issues.

FYIW, My guess is that main dealers often won't re-build a FD properly as it would cost more in labour charges alone than to simply replace the unit with new.

Take two days and do it yourself!

To find lots of info.. just do a search.

You are not alone. If you do a search on final drive FD you will find plenty of bedtime reading. There are two bearings that support the crownwheel, one runs in FD oil, the other doesn't. Bearings do fail, but BumW FD bearings fail far too frequently even at low milages.

Last week while out on an Alps ride, noticed whining noise with slight rough/grinding vibration kind of sensation when conering. All ok when on the straight, but as soon as a bit of lean - noise and vibration starts. Took bike to BMW today, and they reckon to first change rear tyre as pretty close to replacement. The suggestion being as lean starts, tyre moving over onto higher rough edge tread and hence the whining noise and vibration. :rob

I'll give it a go - but personally dont think its all that - i have my suspicions about the shaft drive - or maybe wheel bearing? Anyone else had anything like this?

Whining...

Am on my second fd on my 18month old 58 plate GSA. First went at 16k now at 24k and my drive whines just as yours does. On new tyres so really doubt the suggestion you have had. In for service and brake line recall soon so will see.
Roger.
