Hello

Wheel spacers in a R100GS......

I’m using a Michelin desert (140) in my R100GS but I had to “shape” some mm in the inside of the tire to make it fit.

That tire is now gone and I bought another one. I’m planning to make a wheel spacer but I’ve just notice that I will have some problems with the rear drum brake…

For those with experience: will this be a problem? Some part of the brake shoe will be out of the drum. And I will have a big gap that will allow the dirt to go in…

Is it possible to offset this wheels? Who can do this job?

thanks

The wheel spacer a K100/ K75 should fit but I don't know if it will be thick enough for your situation. TT also sell a spacer kit.

I had a similar problem with new TKCs. A bit of a shock for a moment a long way from home but I only had to pare the right-most knobblies.

Did you do any work on the linnings of the wheel when you fitted the spacer Mr Redboots or I supose the shoes will cut to fit maybe
Ive got a wheel spacer 1mm I supose another wont hurt I fittted it when I got a road tyre off a K100 on the backend

Have to admit, I never even thought about it. I did put new shoes in at the same time.
I think you will find there is plenty of room with 2mm (mines a 3mm). The 5mm seems too far to me and would it affect r/h corners being being that far offset?

Its still in there, even though I now have Tourances on it.

It is possible to respoke the wheel with offset (like mine).
Everyone who is able to respoke the wheel shoud be able to do it. From memory we have HPN, Woody (USA) and I think there is a guy in UK but I can't remember his name. If you look around you might find more people who can do it.
But it's not cheap!

Personally I would have worried more about dirt killing the main-seal then problems with the brake. But maybe 2-3mm would be okay?

This was the main reason why i didn't use Michelin desert in Africa when my Basic was standard.

I had my rear wheel rebuilt at the devon rim company, at my request they offset the rear wheel by 5mm, that just clears a tkc.

Thats only a small offset and i really doubt anybody would notice any degredation in the handling.

If you worry about alignment you can move the swingarm to the right. If you move it to much you also have to move the engine and gearbox.

hello

:beerjug:

I think that I will send Devon an email to see how much does it cost to offset the wheel. I don't want nothing very fancy since it's for an off road tyre.

and from experience sand dunes are excellent to polish the rear wheel
:rolleyes::rolleyes:

I fitted a TKC to Jills 100. It doesn't touch the swing arm :nenau What's wrong with the standard size?????

hello

Val:

I don’t' have any problem with the 130 TKCs. I use them every day. But for African expeditions I like the Michelin desert and the only size is 140mm

BTW, feedback from dlinemotorcycles:
"Not advisable on two counts: Using your existing spokes you could end
up not having enough thread locating in half of the spoke nipples thus
making the wheel weak and secondly you'll put your wheel alignment out
by 5mm"
