Hi All.
Gathering info for a winter 2005 rebuild on 93 Gs1000.
Devon rim company seem to offer a rebuild service for our wheels where other builders seem to run scared or say "never again".
i spoke to the guy at the compny and he seems pretty confident.
However, has anybody personal experience of the guys work/rebuilds. (I am looking to use origianl rim/hub and rebuild with s/s spokes/nipples)

I understand that the Spanish-made Akront wheel rims fitted to Airheads are notoriously difficult to true up satisfactorily. For instance if they get buckled, they are almost impossible to straighten.
However come the Autumn, I'll be taking my GS-PD off the road and shall be sending my wheels to the Devon Rim Company as they seem to be the only place in the UK which does stainless nipples as well as spokes.

Sherlocks use Devon for wheel re-building, I have seen a set re-done, and am saving to get mine rebuilt at some point, excellent craftmanship

They do.

I got my hubs overhauled (blasted and drum skimmed) by them, then got Akront ( now Morad ) alloy rims laced up with stainless spokes and stainless nipples.

Top job,still good now,eight years later.

So you needed new rims? Wouldn't they polish the old rims? From memory Hagons are in Leytonstone, East London, and certainly easier to get to that Devon.

I know Jim Cray will rebuild GS wheels but I've a feeling he cannot get stainless nipples. I know that he doesn't rate stainless spokes compared to the standard plated spokes, but I've not heard anyone else claim they are in any way inferior.

Has anyone considered having their GS rims anodised? What would the cost be likely to be? No more polishing. Wipe clean. Just a thought.

They re-built the front wheel of my R100GS when I bought it three years ago. There is a lad there who is very good at aligning hubs, spokes and wheels. A fraction of the cost of a replacement wheel and transformed the bike.

I got new rims because I fitted a Yamaha front end to my 800 G/S and I wanted the rims to match. I also wanted to go up to a 2.5" rim at the rear,enabling a 130/80 tyre to be fitted.

Any reputable anaodiser won`t anodise used rims,due to the risks associated with any slight corrosion on the inner faces of the spoke/valve holes leading to more severe corrosion in the future being invisible underneath the anodised layer.

The proximity of whoever you use is irrelevent,just phone Parcel Force and they`ll come to your house and pick up your wheels if they`re boxed up. It would be no more than £ 15 for a pair.

Devon Rim Co

Doug at devon rim co is a top bloke. I has my 1100gs rims rebuilt by him after I stripped them and had the rims and hubs powdercoated black.

I was very impressed by the quality of the workmanship. He also should have a turnaround set of 1100/50 rims as I sold him my spare set.

Give him a ring, Carrier was about £10 and I picked them up myself as I was in the area.

I do not know about the quality / tensile strength of the spokes but these are the same spokes he uses in wheels for all his wheel work and he does wheels for some huge bloody motors so the are probarbly man enough.

Stainless is more brittle than regular steel. Okay for road & gentle off-roading but not ideal for serious off-roading, more likely to snap on landing hard?
