THINKING OF HAVING MY WHEELS REBUILT POWDER COATED RIMS ETC STAINLESS SPOKES,HAS ANYONE GOT A PRICE AT WHAT IT WOULD COST ?.

See MAGWA`s recent post on the subject, looked good value, was thinking of having mine done by them, if I knew how I`d provide a link, but I dont:)

anyone use central wheel in coleshill ?

devon rim co are the only people i know who are prepared to build GS tubeless wheels.

they're a little tricky.

last time i looked into it, IIRC it was c. £120 per wheel for the build + powder/anodising which was not cheap either.

Devon Rim Company rebuilt my wheels a year ago with alloy spokes and nipples so they do not weld themselves to the Rim, Lovely job and cost me about £250 Apprx well worth the money.

Do you mean we shouldn't use Stainless steel spokes, been offered £100.00 per wheel respoked with SS.

Have to supply completely stripped of parts, he will remove old, refit with new SS and new nipples (BMW) and set true.

I have an original (and the best) 1100, spokes are now rusted, and some marks on rims, but otherwise the rims are good, is it worth having them repolished and laquared, or leave as is.

What you should have in an ideal world is

S/Steel spokes
Nickle plated brass nipples:D

This stops galvanic corrosion between the flange of the nipples and the rim.:blast

Reason for spoke seizure.

Problem is not so much galvanic corrosion as stainless on stainless seizure.
If stainless nipples are used, the majority will sieze on teh stainless spokes even befoeer wheel is trued.

The nipples go into the hub, not the rim.

The problem with the GS wheels is removing the old spokes as they are an interference fit into the rim. I changed 3 spokes and it took me about an hour.

nipples welding to rims is only a problem if your having your wheels re-built every week:).stainless nipples for me and i,ll worry about them welding to the rims in about 9 years time when i have them re-built again.

I would consider getting the rims re anodised or polished rather that powder coating. Coating WILL get damaged at some stage during tyre changes and then your stuffed because water will get under it and cause corrosion (the coating will then peel off).
Also no one will powder coat without first blasting the rim so once it has been done you're stuck with it.
Powder coating can cause problems in getting the spokes/nipples to refit and then problems later on with the coating settling ie after the wheel has been run for a while the coating compresses down and the spokes loosen themselves off.

wheels

thanks all,i will use the alloys for winter, easyer to clean,i will still keep my eyes open to have the standards done.:thumb
