Hi guys. A mate of mine is thinking of heading over to do the high passes (l'Iseran, Stelvio etc) in September. Will the passes still be open then? Does anyone have an idea when they close?

Should still be open in September(I went over a few last year in Sep.)

Though got particularly good weather in Sep in France last year.

They close when it snows.... hard.

Your chum should be OK in September, for sure..... Unless he's not, in which case he'll be (very) unlucky.

We went up the Stelvio in late September / early October a few years ago. It was 20c or more in the valley but -2c and flecking with snow on the top; so you never really know.

Traffic will be really light, and any Hotels that are open will be cheap, good time to go if you get lucky with the weather, just remember the daylight hours will be getting a bit shorter so plan accordingly.

I guess he'll be on the 'cusp' but as others say he'd be unlucky to encounter closed passes.
That said, as with Wapping we did d'liseran in mid September a couple of years ago and it was baking at the bottom but gradually got colder and wetter as we ascended until we had a couple of inches of wet snow at the top and it was bloody freezing in summer gloves and no heated grips on my old 1100 :)

We went up the Stelvio in the first week of August, about 25c at the bottom yet snow covered at the top from a big snowfall the previous night.

Snow can happen at anytime even in the summer Months (June - August) just a becomes more and more likely as the weeks go by at the end of season.

So that's it, Yodagoat.

Tell your friend that (rather like East Lothian) the local weather will be what the local weather will be. He'll more than likely be OK for all and any of the roads he'll want to hoon up and down during his chosen dates. Tell him to expect the best but at least anticipate the worst. And what's the worst? That a pass might (if he is dead unlucky) be shut and / or might well be on the chilly side.

If he changes his mind and opts instead for December or February, let him go. He'll have a tale to tell when he gets back.

I drove the entire RDGA in mid october last year (2015). This was 11 october.Had the roof down the whole way !

If your heater is anything like that of the previous model you can drive all winter with the top down as long as it isn't actually raining or snowing.
