where am i? a test ...... hehe

Joyseeker....here's a twist to add to your node questioning.....

Ask them if any of them were 'shot towers' as well.....

There's something for you to think about ;)

PS if you'd like, I can split the thread and create one called 'telegraph quest' or whatever you like, containing the relevant stuff but not the false start.......it seems your mission has developed and drifted from the original thread and though it's yours, it may sit well with its own identity to give it the credit it deserves??

Just a thought ;)

yes you are right fanny. the nodes should be separted. and i need help.

but 'semaphore' should be the word...... back at node 3 the landlord said he could get me in touch with a 'telegraph' nerd ..... but i'm drawn to the semaphore ;)

no worries...gimme a name to use for a title and i'll wave the magic wand ;)

the title

semaphore to blood

i feel this quest is about how people back then bonded together like no bonding to mobile phones or tv.

it is an example of anglo nerds. the pulling together and the team work in need.

this potential bond is in those that live in the nodes today.

I wish you'd stop calling people nerds. It's not exactly very friendly, despite what your take on the word might be...

nerd
n. Slang

1. A foolish, inept, or unattractive person.
2. A person who is single-minded or accomplished in scientific or technical pursuits but is felt to be socially inept.

Steve's got a point JS......I know it's your 'style' and I also know that you mean no harm by it, but you risk clouding other's judgement of you and lessening the value of some of your posts with the reaction the word gets.....

Just a thought ;)

ok, but i will remain a nerd ;)

Nodes or nerds, no matter...

...both will enjoy this little book on the subject:-

Semaphore node 5 Esher

nerd joyseeker returned from node 4 uneasy heading home. talked to his maker .... again js said to him ..... 'why did you give me a nature not to let things go?' ...... 'why to fight again?'.

ahhh … we are back to semaphore and not telegraph. it is really now claygate and not esher. and this is a solo place in a place that is not solo. if you know the 'greek vine', the plate smashing place, just go up the road you don't want to and you meet 'telegraph lane'. it becomes a gravel track and tested this nerds skills on 2 wheels up telegraph hill.

dad was out and thanks to son for letting me nerd around.

26554856-M.jpg

i was told of a filled in well at the clump on the centre right but the dad was thought to have built a cyst pit under the iron plate on the near left. hmmmm ..... no that is the stone water store me thinks. note dad's italian stallion on right.

victoria plumes to come for joy here.

what is amazing is the 'marden ... node 11' papers said the admiralty buildings were of poor quality. they were renovated to what remains now but they are great.

and this is the reference point pic to the previous on the thread.

i go through all this trouble and this post happens ....... ok unconscious anglo .... you've done it .... but if it wasn't for previous posts i'd truly called you something else.

fanum ..... why do you protect these ....... begins with 'n'

truly realise now why the 'line of authority' was enforced so harshly back then ...... it was all they could understand.

after all steve has had to see and read on this thread he had to post this ..... and then the moderator fanny had to support his sensitivities.

be small steve. you have the 'vote' steve ..... be true to the responsibilities now :beerjug:

and if this is a wind up ...... i've surely posted in the wrong place.

let's see a thread of yours, steve, positive, self confident and of worth ...... without you :hide behind PC and the fanny skirt. :mooney

1. A foolish, inept, or unattractive person.
2. A person who is single-minded or accomplished in scientific or technical pursuits but is felt to be socially inept.

was it a couple of possible definitions or the actual word nerd that upsets you?

Good idea...top thread. :) Could be the start of a book. :)

I was wondering about doing something similar with the coal posts - maybe divide London in 4 or more sectors and then split the effort. I can tackle the Surrey sector around Banstead, Reigate etc.

Joyseeker said:
good idea .... but ahhhhh ..... i live in surrey :(

No problem...the 4 sectors can be subdivided or there can be teams for each sector. :)

count me in ..... suggest you start the thread and kick things off with a meet.

OK. I'll kick off a thread in a couple of days. I'll have a look at the geography of these things in the meanwhile. :)

Semaphore node 9 Haslemere

for clues to the location of nodes 8 and 9 we visited haslemere museum. we needed an old map.
27467295-M.jpg

2 possibilities were underlined for us  'hastle' hill is where we headed first for what was marked as a semaphore site.
27455673-M.jpg

sadly i have to report node 9 was demolished in the early 1900s and a hotel with great views built. then recently the hotel was converted into luxury flats we see now. the name remains the same as on the map :)
27455674-M.jpg

and look at the flat names :beerjug:
i gather it was an irish lord sligo was responsible for the death of node 9. the old masionary preserved are from his hotel.

the mystery of telegraph cottage near node 9

you see up till now i had been following one line/chain which started in the very early 1800s ..... the semaphore line. when technology replaced with telegraph my thinking was they just connected up the nodes with crude copper cables.

this i thought because back at node 12 compton the builders said they had found masses of copper cables on surrounding fields.

so why near node 9 was there a 'telegraph cottage'?

node 9 by the way would have looked like this.....
