so what of telegraph cottage near node 9?

this was a puzzling pic in the museum

the shutter system but not much else mentioned.

a neighbour got out his book and here is our semaphore chain. and the chains down to chatham and plymouth.

but what is this? another telegraph chain? note it joins at node 3 putney heath.

this is just what i didn't want to happen ..... the devil of detail coming out ...... i wanted simple.

the other/earlier shutter 'telegraph' chain.

here it is 'telegraph cottage' on 'blackdown' southeast of haslemere also.

it was a node on the 'shutter chain' of the late 1700s and replaced by the semaphore chain as confirmed here. note also the better quality of what survives. the later semaphore nodes, as stated in the marden papers, were of poor quility. so why did quality get worst in time? well in earlier times who challanged victoria?

Semaphore node 8 Witley

I've said so many times on this quest that 'this was the hardest node to find'. well again this one was the hardest.... it took two visits after a re-group on old material.

bannacale hill was a key reference and some locals now refer to it as 'barnecle' hill. and the house on the map at the top was a destraction.

but by getting off the bike and trusting that the dog was friendly the owner of this cottage showed me the site of this node.

on his land and the round depression more clear from the air (he says) is where the foundations of the wooden 3 story tower was.

Semaphore node 13 Portsdown Hill

the easliest node to find thanks to the web and a friend.

right next to this distinct fort is a field where the node was which had to be knocked down so as not to compromise the defences.

the next node is eastnet centre right. a square depression is clear here with just a triangulation point now built in the middle.

Semaphore node 14 Eastney

there were several targets to aim for in eastney which part is now known as Southsea.

we settled for 'lumps fort' and the Royal Marines Museum next door confirmed this is what is left.

more of WWII then the 1800s.

but the clue here is the 2 huge fire places on either side. this node was needed only when the portsmouth smog was bad.

surrey hills camping

if you want a great camp site in the surrey hills go here

if this sign puts you off you don't belong here.

open all day and full of idle chat about motorcycles, farming, plumping etc.

the bike stays in the same spot.

your campsite across the road.

and this is very nearby..... a road that turns into a track - bridle way - track and then back to a road.... and a very mucky road in the trees it is.... but you will have to find yourself.... hehe.

well, ok, a clue. the very sand of surrey which makes the water for some great fishing..... course as well.... we fish for the carp with flies if you want a try

damn have no pic of this. but nearby in farncombe is a famous butcher of 'food heros' note for its chicken...... but little did stein know of the 'gentleman's roast'...... the salmon fillet of the silverside wrapped in bacon..... no fat, no gristle just pure aged meat (the truth) and the fatty beacon smokes into the meat...... just 40mins is all it needs (oven in the pub) and half is £15 (feeds 6) and remember only 2 of these fillets to a cow....... real blokes food.
