The haynes manual says just below the right hand cylinder of an 1150gs but where it should be...is infact blank! There is a long number on the engine just behind the right hand throttle body starting with three '0's, 4 numbers then 3 letters...is that it? Same thing on another 1150 I saw today.

Called up a dealer and he agreed with the haynes manual

Just bought bike, so papers in the post.

fanks!

The number you can see is the gearbox number -
The engine number is more in front below the R/H cylinder if you get my drift.
it's on a long thin raised section, running from top to bottom.

I think it's etched, and you can't see feck all after a couple of years

Really!

What, you cant see it on the bike ever again !?! Thats poo that is, I just know that some official in some far off land will want to see it on the bike ....just to check it against the carnet.

Sh*t.

I doubt it.

The only country that I know of that registers the engine number (apart from the USA) is the UK and even here it's not a legal requirement!

Well I do hope so....but taking a bike through South America, nearly every single immigration person wanted to check all the numbers on the bike, just to take it down on a scrap of paper he probably would then bin.

Problem is, some of them got pretty arsey if you didnt play ball.

In effect, the bike you are taking in doesnt match with the official paper, meaning that you could sell the bike in their country, make a fat profit and not pay the import duty....maybe I am being paranoid, but its a paranoia I could do without.

Cheers,

brian

To make you sleep easier, put the gearbox number as the engine number. It's nice and easy to see, looks all big and official, and the jobsworths will love it.

Brian,

Simple answer, send the V5 to Swansea with an engine change notified, state none in the engine number box. Your papers will then match the bike.

There is no legal requirement to have an engine number in the UK. It is a requirement for manufacturers to notify that the vehicle has a VIN stamping, a VIN plate and one major component marked, after that the 'major component' element has been complied with.

If you know anyone with a grey-import car get them to read you the engine number from their V5!

Cool

Thanks steps/mike, I reckon the way forward is to make that change....strangely enough my previous bike was a grey import & that didnt have a engine no. on it either (just checked it).

Cheers,

Brian
