Where is the noise coming from

Hey,

Got a project bike, R65 (0452) from 1986, that is making a clear noise somewhere in the engine when running (starts smooth, runs steady.

Been fiddling around with the clutch cable moment, but the noise consists when the engine is in gear, when gripping the clutch lever the engine turns down the rather metallic sounding noise (as if there is a loose engine chain). Starter and solenoid are doing their job cleanly.
When revving the throttle in neutral, sometimes the engine isn't able to shut off, even when the key is switched to off, which also has me guessing. The entire loom has been replaced to fit a Motogadget M-Unit and the rectifier is swapped for a 14.4V capable variant to comply with a Li:on battery as well.

Can this just be clutch (plates)? Or do I need to look elsewhere? Got some video with the noise recorded, but cannot add to this topic

I think you need to take the gearbox out and then everything will be evident. It sounds like the clutch release bearing but may well have done more damage.

Noise sources are often difficult to tie down & a video should give you direction - alternatively use the old trick & put the handle of a large screwdriver to your ear & set the blade against various areas of the engine whilst running.

Metallic noise - certainly sounds like the clutch release bearing or the clutch plate itself. Otherwise could it be the cam chain or tensioner - you mention a loose chain noise.

Running on - we really need to know more about this condition. Could be carbon build up, maybe an intake air leak; could simply be the ignition switch.

Clutch throwout bearing ?

That makes a squeaking noise if the earlier ‘proper’ bearing and thrust piston, or a grinding noise if the later one piece thrust bearing. . I’ve never had one that makes a metallic noise… the bike sounds like it’s been “hipsterised “ … which usually means bolt on shiny/blingy bits with the mechanicals ignored :D

Am I the only one who thinks we are pissing in the dark here?

I've not seen a link to a sound file so my guess is that a mouse has gotten into the speedo and is making the rear tyre over-inflate and rub against the front mudguard. Just as likely as anything else.

Think is great that on some groups , no what the problem , people say " set the tappets and balance the carbs "

Could allways jack the number plate up and slide in a new bike !

Sorry, been busy with the regular day job. Have to figure out form where to upload. Maybe just dump it on tube as the recorded movie it is (forums are so primitive 😉)

And stop pissing in the dark...it will require soap for your washer afterwards 😁

Not quite what I was expecting - It sounds completely knackered, in need of an engine/gearbox overhaul.

Probably cheaper to source another motor, given your proximity to the Fatherland.

It was running fine when she got taken apart, so some small change like a clutch cable adjustment could have thrown her over. Think I'll ask a local service center for their thoughts also. Maybe it's minor, but I can always ask for just investigation up to a certain amount to keep my pockets from spilling money 😱

Why did it get taken apart ? What work was done while it was apart ? …… can’t see how adjusting the clutch cable is going to fix that engine :D

I have heard noises like this when the gearbox is knackered. Worn gears on an output shaft or worn-out bearings. The engine sounds normal. Refurbishment or replacement of gearbox required, unless you are very lucky.

Hope this helps.

Tnx

Hope the outcome is not most unfortunate, time will tell. For now this is where the direction is heading. Will post the results in due time

Take it to someone who knows about boxers not a service centre or you will get ripped off
