I have heard a lot about a particular "What Oil" thread, which I'm pretty sure was a "sticky" but can't find it. I've done a search on "Oil" and just get a message saying that the word is too small. :nenau

I've searched for posts by "Tarka" but I haven't got 4 hours spare to plough through the lot. :D

Before Tarka blows a gasket, I have honestly spent 20 minutes trying to find it.

Thanks Kevin. :thumb

I did find that one, but I thought I'd seen a thread giving specific oil for certain bikes and mileages eg 1150 Adventures over 9,000 miles - Castrol GPS recommended etc etc.

(1) As the thread suggests, oil is oil, who makes it is irrelevant.

(2) Look in the handbook, it will tell you which multi-grade to use. Chances are it's 10W-40. Simply pour in the right amount and the job's done.

I realise that its irrelevant who makes it, (my original post should have been clearer) but certain types (eg synthetic / semi synthetic / mineral etc) must be better for the engine than others depending on whether its run in etc, otherwise why do BMW put different oil back in it when its serviced - depending on how many miles its done?

-Are you pulling my leg? Or do I not get what you mean?
One oil for 1150ccm and another one for 1200ccm?
One for more then 9000 miles?
Neh, I just can't believe that! :eek

So what oil for an 1986 K100RS, passed 300 000 kilometres (186300 miles) in May 2006, then? In Norway, not as hot as Spain.
That's Knut's bike, and he put on any cheap oil for cars/engines.

The first oil are different, but not the rest.
And I wonder what the oilexperts say about my car running in the same oil all year up here; +25c - -25c. My car must be a miracle! :thumb

Old, real old engines are more sensitive, I believe, because of the metal they had many years ago. But I just can't believe modern engines are so sensitive.

But it's nice to see so much love for the engines here! Really! :)

Myselfes I do not put any type of oil on my F650 because of the wet clutch.
10-40 and 15-50 feels different if I leave the bike in gear and start it when it's cold the next day - it seems like there is glue in the oil! The clutch do not let me put it in neutral if I pick the wrong oil, but apart from that it does not matter if I use 10-40 or 15-50.

-Do you believe those who sell oil are having a good time when we (bikers who love our bikes) ask all kinds of questions and then buy the most expensive they have? Well, I do! ;)

Last time I asked for oil for my car I said:
''-Do you have oil for my red Corolla? It's a three-doors type with new tires.''
He smiled, picked a bottle and said;
''Yes, this are made for red cars!''
...and we smiled... :P

;) :) Liv.

My gaskets are fine......but you could have got the answer in 20 seconds via a workshop manual.
