Use what is commonly called the canbus socket that is under the false tank top panel that's held on by 4 screws. You can get the plug needed from a BM dealer and there are instructions on this site on how to wire it up. If you use this plug, it's live as long as the accessory one is, that is, it switches a few minutes after the ignition is switched off
Firstly, this only applies if your bike is 2004 or later.
The sidelight is the small bulb in the headlight unit, it is the one that is on when you place the ignition in p (park). It is also on when the ignition is on. It is directly under the main headlight as shown (marked 6)
The wire colour that you need to connect + volts to is grey/black. The brown is - volts /earth.
You should actually be ok wiring the unit directly in there. Using the fuse on the zumo lead as well.
The only other item on that fuse is the tail light. The fuse is rated at 4 amps (fuse number 7 in the fuse block under the seat) but the tail light and sidelight draw less than one amp. I checked with the diagrams
Mine is connected through a switch directly to the battery, so i can use the gps without the ignition switched on. This is because my gps does not have an internal battery like the zumo. The wayi haveshown will switch the power on with the ignition.
For ease of installing i would do it as i have shown you. Looking on the garmin website the zumo's maximum current draw is 15 watt or 1.25 amp. With the zumo and the lights the total draw will be around 2 amps, half of the fuse rating. It will be fine
I am running the sidelight, tail light, 2 relays and a temperature sensor off that wire.
I've taken a feed off the same wire for my Garmin Quest. I can't remember whether I used a relay or not.
I've also got a relay switched off the same wire to power some auxilliary lights as well.
I just wanted to chime in a give a "Thank You" for giving what looks like an excellent answer to this question.
Of course, I'm now going to ask for one further piece of advice....
Is it best to splice in near the headlight where you have easy access near the headlight, or further back somewhere that gives better protection from the elements?
My 2006 F650GS is "new to me" and I haven't yet opened it up to see how things are laid out.
hi and welcome DonGar, its easier to splice in near the sidelight beasue there are only two wires there and you don't hae to go ripping into the main loom to find the correct coloured wires. It wil be fine if its a soldered joint with some heatshrink over the top.
