A Cigar!!

I think it was 1978 when I went there last, it has been taken over recently by the Carlow Co Co. The walled gardens are magnificent!

probably a good story behind it's history. If anything like other ruins around country a story of great wealth squandered by madness, feuds or just sheer bankrupting, extravangance. Do you have more pics or info Bin? Might be worth a trip.

Google is yer friend...

Hi,
Google Duckett's Grove for info.
Location attached, this picture is out of date, the place has been cleared and the walled gardens are wonderful.
My sister knew the lady who tried to stop the place falling apart totally in the 70's, Francis Brady. She tried to get her goats to eat the ivy off the walls to stop them (walls) being destroyed.

What has taken my sister aback is that there is no mention of Francis Brady, who lived there from mid-70's up to 2004 and kept the place open. I wonder what happened?

Nostalgia

My great grandfather was, I understand an "under steward" and the farm manager on the estate from about 1870 until the early years of the century when he started farming on his own farm nearby. There used to be a photo somewhere at home of the estate staff sometime in the 1890's. :rob

During the 70's and 80's there uses to be a pub called Duckett's Grove in the gate lodge on the Carlow side of the estate. Many's the night when we were young:beer:

When my kids were small (late 80's) and we went home for the weekend we used to bring the kids to Miss Brady's horse riding school for the day! She had a multitude of ponies and for about £1 the kids got a full day of pony riding, tack cleaning and muck shifting:clap
She was a "character" but a lovely lady!

It's great to see the place being preserved for the community:thumb2

Well worth a sunday spin:D

Worth a visit

Lovely pictures, Gerry! I can feel the hayfever rising of those fields of canola seed!!

Jaws - that was the first Salthill dash, aka the Frozen Finger Fish Dash! Flash said his wife had to pour a kettle of hot water over him to get him in off the bike when he got home!

There is a great little cafe there now as well. Award winning homemade scones I think
