Hi, over here from the twin area

I'm gonna make a swop onto a 1200gs. Looking for either 09plate with circ 10k on the clock, or 60plate with circ 5k. The price difference seems to be around £2-2500. Obviously the newer 1 will be a twin cam model and still have 12months warranty probably, but then the old ones would probably have luggage inc and come with a BM used warranty package.

Options wise, i'm thinking Dynamic and Premium packages - lots seem to have these, and i presume the retained value with these options might be best? Do all these fancy bits start adding long term maintenance / failure bills?

I'm coming off an F650gs(twin) which i've loved to be fair, great fun to throw around and exploit the limited power to the full - which is good fun. So, would i notice the difference between the earlier model and the twin cam?

Its been a while since i've brought a secondhand bike, and i'm sort of lured into the whole main dealer / warranty therefore the bike should be good / ok mentality - which is probably a bit foolish. What should i be watchin out for? what is tyre life like on these bikes, and what is the service schedule on the bikes?

Sorry for all the Q's, but just wanna make sure i get the right 1, and u guys have all the answers :-)

I did think about getting a brand new 1, but don't much like the apr those bm finance offers :jager

I would recommend getting an 09 GS. Then with the money you'd save, spend a small amount on buying Remus headers and an Accelerator Module.
Then you'll have the same power and performance as the twin cam GS's.

jobs a good un.

Unless you fancy a nice 2008 model with Comfort Pack + ABS, full luggage (3 boxes plus SW-Motech Tank bag), Airflow Screen, Winglets, mudsling, pannier inner bags, Accelerator module, cat replacement + Std Chrome Exhausts, quick action throttle, std plus Tony Archer modified seats and £1200 of Wilburs finest suspension?

Been offered a good deal on a Super Tenere and if I could get sensible offer on my bike for a quick sale without having to strip all the bits off I would do the deal.

have you ridden one?

I hated it. I found it really top heavy and ponderous, and it felt horrible on the brakes, on corner entry with the soft forks diving.

I thought it handled very well and had little fork dive, rode a Stelvio straight aftwerwards and it was mega soft at the front, but the Yamaha seemed very sweet handling and at low speeds much better balanced than the GS.

I am either gona get a Tenere or the new Honda, but with work being a bit dodgy at the moment the Yamaha may win as the price is right, even on px I could get a new Yam for under £3k on top of my 3 year old GS, and with 18 months 0%, and if it was not for dodgy work conditions I would just trade it in and take the credit tomorrow, but as work could get slack I want nothing on tick - though the wedding savings would cover it

Also by all accounts this bike appears to be a ticking time bomb . I don't think I would touch that bike with a barge pole . Best stay well clear or you too will be in a world of misery:

spoke to 1 of the stealers who had 09plates and a 10plate (twin cam) in stock, he was of the opinion that it wasn't a massive issue and reckoned hitting the right price mark for and getting the best condition was probably the guidance he could give - refreshing change, instead of selling the most expensive in stock i thought.

looking for a bike with a warranty to be honest :-)

Rasher that bike of yours sounds fantastic! And we all know on here its never given you a hint of trouble. Despite you waiting patiently for it to do so:D
Yamahaha can't give those tenerereres away so I would bet they offered you a good deal:augie.....................

You would be insane to change such a bike:thumb

As predicted 2nd October 2010:

.....Based on your posts, you have been riding Japanese multi-cylinder bikes (12 in all) for 20 years, clocking up 100,000 miles in the process, without one significant failure.

As you seem to like crude statistics, I make that:

An average annual mileage of 5,000 per bike.

You have had about 12 bikes in 20 years. You therefore swap bikes roughly every 18 months. So, each bike clocks up about 7,500 miles whilst in your hands.

The service interval on an ober unterreliable BuMW is 6,000 miles or once every 12 months. Chances are you will not be making more that one visit to the dealer's for a service before moving on. Reliability should be the least of your worries.

Good luck with the Yamaha..... :augie

Surely if work is looking a bit iffy now is the time to take out one of them loans with protection that pays back the credit company if you suddenly become jobless? :augie

So here's the situation, 3options

a) brand new 1200gs with dynamic and premium packs (got the new blue in stock)
b) 2nd hand, 60 plate 1200gs with dynamic and premium packs plus spoked wheels, white, 4500mls - £10999
and the very tempting wild card
c) 2nd hand, 07 plate, 1200 adv gs, with only heated grips, white and red (great colour combo), 20,000mls -£7750 (in tip top condition)

I've got a test ride organised tomorrow on new 1200gs (which covers off the first 2 bikes) - if i think the 1200gs is ok for me, then i'll try the Adv.

Any thoughts on the Adv i might be considering. This bike is in top condition for its age and mileage, but has limited spec. Only other concern is, i'm only 5ft10ins in height and not the biggest set person - so weight and height of the Adv is a consideration (coming from a F650G twin!)

Just my opinion of course but i would plump for option c , as for your height and build i wouldnt worry to much , i came from low lightweight sports bikes and got used to a gsa in no time , and if you have any issues with height there are loads of different seat options to suit you :thumb2

if those were my choices id go for the 60 plate gs,leave the adv to the big boys:D

I am 6'2 and 16 odd stone in my late (late) thirties, in my opinion I really would not want to ride the GSA if I was under 6 foot without some sort of lowered seat. Its also a heavy thing to wheel around the garage with a full tank of juice. Once on the move that weight dissappears and I personally love the looks of the GSA.

An 07 GSA (100 bhp I believe) is going to feel like a slug compared to a lighter twin cam powered GS which the other two powerplants will be, in isolation you wouldnt notice but back to back you will.

option B (60 plate) sounds by far the best to me I am also a big fan of dynammic and premuim packs (and the latest engine) personally they are stuff I wanted, still I'd still try them both to make up your own mind or you might end up thinking what if, it will reaffirm your choice if nothing else:thumb2.

Update

So i took a test ride today - long story short - the 2010 onwards 1200gs is perfect for me.....

The engine and gearbox are just great, chassis is great above 5mph, and such a smooth/soft throttle response compared to the f650gs(twin) i have today. I just need to get adjusted to the slightly waggly feel as i come to stop (setting off is just fine), i think this is just about different weight and seat heights mainly.

Loved the bike, handled so sweatly even with little time to adjust, brakes are great too. All seemed so natural really, and confidence inspiring too.

And so........ given the offers which are on offer this month - i think my dealer is chasing a target in Sept, its gonna be a brand new 1200gs with dynamic and premium packs - maybe in Lupin Blue....or white - decisions decisions eh.

Of course the new bike won't come quick enough once ordered :-)

Looks like you guys will have to suffer my rambles on this part of the forum going forwards. Thanks for you comments

Deposit paid on a Lupin Blue 1200gs, premium / dynamic pack - gotta wait 10 painful days before collection :-)
