Looking for an alarm for a new bike. Any ideas on which is best and why?

Cheers

Ed

See if you can get an old stock Datatool System 3 alarm/immobiliser :rob

The reason is, that they are no more unreliable than other types, but it is possible to link out the immobiliser circuits in the event of a failure - if you know how.

That might sound at odds with the security of the unit, but once a thief has managed to get at the internal connections of the alarm - it's game over anyway.

I certainly wouldn't travel abroad without the ability to bypass the immobiliser - it sure pisses on your hols if your bike has to be trucked home because of a problem with the alarm.

Defo don't want an immobiliser, bike already has one and any more areas for potential failure ain't good!

Then have a look at a Datatool alarm only - I think the Type 21 is the model (but may be discontinued)

The type 21 might just be on special offer then.

Just fit a flashing red led wired to arelay so it only flashes when the ignition is off, looks like an alarm is fitted, if it goes wrong bike still works:beerjug:

:thumb I have done this for years with all my bikes - never had one touched (but then never had a new bike worth pinching :augie)

Had the alarm/immobiliser removed from my bike a few weeks ago when it immobilised it when I needed to go to work. Seems the indicator connection was dodgy and this is connected to the immobiliser. I could cope with doing hand signals, I couldn't cope with not being at work. Cost me £50 in cab fares that day.

is there such a thing <one that does not malfunction> if so please fill us in:thumb:thumb

Loads on the market ...... for around £70 ...... for a good one ... 100dcb plus

Oxford make a nice one that you can use to put a chain through .... the ones that are just for discs are a little limited to their use ......... just google it ...... :thumb

If you want just a disc lock then MCN are doing a special deal for half price for one this week but it's just for the disc (Xena stainless steel) and can't really be used for a chain and or disc like the yellow Oxford

Unless you absolutley have to have one for insurance purposes I would avoid an alarm like the plague!! I believe they are responsible for stranding more motorcycles than any other electrical glitch so avoid at all costs.

Disc locks can also be a nightmare, I have seen many a brake calipers sheared off by forgetful riders taking off and forgeting to remove them, the best ones have the stretch cord to attach to the brake lever in some bright colour to remind you it is on. I have never done this I hasten to add but I did manage to crack the front mudguard on my hayabusa twice when wheeling the bike backwards before removing the disc lock :blast

I would go with a good quality chain and lock with the 'flashing LED' light like Miz said.
