Which Disk Lock ?

Did a quick search and found a very old thread with a couple of suggestions but that was well out of date...

So can anyone suggest a reasonable disk lock at a good price, need the deterrent factor more than ultimate security, only used when we are travelling.

If you can still get them the Motrax Vishas is very solid if a bit heavy. It would be easier to cut the disk than that lock.

A Xena with integral alarm would be a good deterrent. It will also reduce the risk of you riding off without removing it.

E.g. http://www.ghostbikes.com/products/1345-xena-xzz6-motorcycle-disc-lock-alarm.html but I got mine from an Ebay shop. They do more expensive ones with Sold Secure certification too.

Batteries are available from ebay for much cheapness.

I use the Oxford Monster. It doesn't have an alarm, but is high vis in colour, so you'd have to be a total knob to ride off with it still attached.

Unfortunately in the holiday mood that could be easily done

If the bike is facing out put the lock under the brake calliper then it will only move an inch or two before the lock does its stuff. Put the lock on top of the disc and the bike will move about 2 yards then clang crash bent disc and scratched paint.

I have this one It's pretty bloody solid and was 'best disc lock' some time ago in one of the magazines ...

I keep an inch of battery breather pipe tube over the key bit of my disc lock key - I simply slip it over the key bit of my bike ignition key after locking the disc lock in place making it impossible to put the key in the ignition without removing the reminder tube and disc lock - a 2p solution that cost me £200 after someone told me about it after I shagged my Brembo!

Another vote for the Xena. I have an older model, about five years old now but it still works fine and they're good bits of kit.

Having ridden away with one on and taken the resultant trip to the pavement a simple reminder cord that stretches up and round your bars is the best reminder I reckon

Don't spend silly money on a heavyweight item.

If someone is going prepared and carrying equipment to cut a disc lock off it doesn't matter what make you use. They'll cut it off regardless of how much it cost you to buy.

I keep a pound of butter in the fridge and have never had a bike stolen. It also doubles up as an elephant detector, as they leave footprints behind.

Bods will report that their disk lock is best as, like me, they have not had a bike lifted off the street.

Buy whichever you like, can afford, will match the colour of your bike, hair or whaterver criteria you fancy applying. As St Eptoe (all bow) suggests...

If they really want YOUR bike, they will have it, no matter what.

A disc lock makes it just a tiny bit harder to wheel away, that's all. No need for cutters, thermic lances, hacksaws or snapped off biros, just two reasonably ablebodied blokes and the limited intelligence between them sufficient to lift... and a van to lob it into.

Old freezer vans are popular as the insulation deadens the noise of the useless (but expensive) alram going Wheeeeeeeeeeeee Wheeeeeee all the way to the breaker's yard. A breaker's yard who will then strip the bike and sell the parts on e-Bay where they will be snapped up by Tossers (and tossers) as dealers' prices are a rip-off, mate.

Whilst I dont disagree on my own jaunts i put an abus granite u lock through the back wheel, helps me sleep a tad better (or is that the wine)

While i wouldn't have a disc lock if you paid me
i 'break a habit' to remind me that
~ i've put a lock on
~ need fuel
~ mustn't forget to pick up Wife on way home (yes, i did forget that once )
etc. etc
I park in gear or flick the kill switch (i never use it normally) or leave the sidestand down, even though it's on the mainstand.
Just do SOMEthing that breaks my pattern.
When i come back to the Bike i think "WTF did i do that for?" - and then remember why
works for me.

I agree totally, I just want a reasonably priced disk lock to make my bike look more difficult than the one next too it.

I have never had use of one before on trips abroad, but this time going to the Costas and am just a little bit more concerned(more Brits too be honest.)

Like you say if they are going to nick it they will, but at least I can tick the box in the claim from saying it had additional security.

Hey anyways mines an "old" GSA and all those new WC's are more desirable .
