Looking for a headlamp guard for an F800GS. Any recommendations on which is best please? Thanks

Hi mate not taking the piss I think it depends on what you need it to do e.g I splashed out on one not sure which but it's like a black metal grid with stainless side brackets poss rugged roads? Very good at keeping branches off etc then I realised it wouldn't be going through many jungles & the biggest risk was stone chips which could fly through the grid.. so I cut a piece of clear perspex to go on the inside to block it off. With hindsight I could of just bought the perspex for about a 1/3 of the price.

Cheers Al. It is mainly for stone chips etc... I too live in the real world and in all honesty try and avoid swamps and the like where I can. Probably a clear one might be best for me too. I mostly ride roads

After losing a headlight to a stone on the M25, I got a rugged roads metal guard to protect my new light. There is a possibility that a stone may get through the grid, but the chance is slim.

Yep go with that. At first I made my own out of Makralon held on with sticky buds. Cheap £4 lasted 2 years but looked pants. Now use a rugged roads polycarb, great bit of kit.

Just checked them out. Their polycarbonate version looks interesting..

Looks pretty good I think they've upgraded the polycarbonate one as it used to be a lot cheaper than that but it didn't have the metal re-inforcement extending up and round the sides :thumb2

Bought one from Rugged Roads a while ago, had to take it off due to light scattering out of the top and riding at night.

its not so much that they are un-usable but gets a tad annoying at night, FWIW.

Cheers

Just an opinion but unless you're getting off road plenty or really fancy the look, I wouldn't bother. The headlamp is a bit crap as it is without reducing the throw and intensity any further - and that's with a decent aftermarket set of bulbs. I ride very dark, rural roads covered in crap and need all the light I can get. In the last 20 years I've never had a stone smash my bike's headlamp*.

*clearly I'm tempting fate here...

When i bought my F650 GS the previous owner had just parted with £145 of folding for a second hand light unit following a single stone chip. If it was me and I do, keep your headlamp covered.

Luke sorry you've had a problem. I've got one on my F800GS (obviously :bounce1 ) and never had a problem at night.

Deano if you'd like to give me a call on 07828 6917411 you might be able to twist my arm for a bit of discount :friday
