Lost my Draper multi-tool (forgot to remove it from my laptop bag before going through security at Dublin airport - doh!). :aidan

So I'm going to replace it with a pucker Leatherman or Gerber. What would you recommend?

I think mine's a "Charge" ... in tactical Titanium.

:hack

Be careful when you google "leatherman" :nod

Most of the people on set I work with have a leatherman wave, seems to be standard issue.

I've got an old original that I just couldn't part with.

They certainly look cool. What makes them better?

The smaller one is cool because the plier heads fold back into the handles as well. Only problem is that the lever button to push against to open the pliers sticks out on its own. Not a problem in the nylon pouch.

The big one has a clever mechanism that provides the jaws with much more squeezing power, so you can get a grip of stuff without squeezing the handles as hard. I found this better in cold weather when your hands are less pliable.
Also, I personally think that the overall quality is better than the last couple of Lethermans I've owned. The Swiss Tool is very clever, but a bit smarmy IYKWIM. The SOG is purposeful without being too gadgety.

The leather pouch though is really shit!

Thanks guys for your responses.

Doesn't make my choice any easier - but then again I didn't expect a simple answer.

Interesting that there is no mention of Gerber! And I've never heard of SOG - more reading I think.

the paratool in my opinion is good and you can see why they made it like that it does not infringe any patents however is bloody dangerous the hinged pliers can collapse if your twisting the handle which then shuts on your hand trapping a good chunk of meat (your hand) in the mechanism which closes like a mouse trap and cutting it to ribbons....:thumb2

the Mk 1 leatherman fell appart after 12 months us use...

I like the Gerber cos I mainly use the pliers to hold hot metal lamp shutters and you can get the gerber pliers out in one move.... but I lent it to someone who promptly lost/ stole it....:blast

I currently use a Leatherman wave which is alright...

I still have a Wenger extreme with is a Swiss army knife on steriods with a full sized pliers and can have torx and hex bit pieces fitted into the handle which turns it into a T-shape screw driver set... it's really good at getting a job done....

anwyay all of these things serve a purpose, but none are equal to proper tools....

some are dangerous and if you get it wrong you can really fuck your hands up.... so your now stranded with a fucked up hand.... bleeding like a bastard.....so use with care....:thumb2

better of with a £15 swissarmy knife ive got a leatherman wave in a box somewhere you can have it for £60 posted dont think ive ever used it to bloody heavy for a start dont see what the attraction of them is

25 year guarantee with leatherman

Personally I'd recommend the leatherman wave.
I've had them for about 10 years. Use it every day as an electrician (never on live circuits:blast) and when i have broken it due to mis-use you simply box it up, send it off and leatherman replace it. Never had to show a receipt either.
Best customer service I have experienced.
Also, Blacks are doing the wave and an led torch for £70. The wave on it's own is normally about £90
Can't see this offer on their website, but saw it in the shop yesterday, and they're currently knocking a further 30% off everything in store.

In the interest of public service I would like it to be known that if you google "leatherman" The multitools can be found on the 12593rd page. :toungincheek

I have a couple Gerbers:

Sharp locking blades, accessible with one hand and have stood up well to the abuse. Also seem much better priced than Leathermans. That being said - don't be fooled by the really cheap multi-tools. You'll find out how bad they are as soon as you actually try to use it!
