Hi Everyone

Having read the opinions of folk on here about laptops, and seeing the great price that some Lenovos are selling for on the 'bay I'm considering actually buying my own laptop for the first time ever ...

The question is, which one?

I was a whizzo on the old BBC computers, but nowadays I'm pretty much lost.

All I'm likely to do is surf the net, write a few emails, and run my flight planning software (here). So I'll nead reasonable compactness, and good battery life.

Any recommendations gratefully received :thumb2

Cheers aye

Simon

Simon,

I would have thought any modern laptop should be more than powerful enough for your needs, unless your playing 3D games or doing video editing the lowest spec modern processors will suffice.

If you plan to keep it for quite some time it may be worth geting a 64 bit operating system (certainly avoid any 32 bit processors as these are long in the tooth and everything is starting to go 64 bit now)

Ideally a 64-bit Windows 7 machine should be a good bet for both performance and future-proofing.

If your not storing lots of video and audio the hard drives will all be more than you need (100GB would probably do and I doubt you will find anything less than 200GB these days), and memory should be sufficient on lower priced kit - but try to get as much as you can, although 2GB would probably be enough if you can get 4GB that would be better for the long term.

Thanks Rasher

For clear and simple advice I can understand. Much appreciated.

Have used Lenovos at work for 12 years - they're chuffin' marvellous. They just work and take all manner of topbox / car boot / plane abuse.

For compactness and lightness, the X200 (think the new one is X201) is excellent. 12" screen, small enough for even the smallest economy seatback table and with the 4 cell battery, more than 6 hours battery life. Even the standard battery gives 4 hours. :thumb2

Not the cheapest, but there's a very good reason for it. :D

S205?

Bought 4 of those to use as consoles on some much bigger computers last month. Customer wanted Lenovo, and these are about the most cost effective I could find. Not bad little net books, as it happens, 200 from pc world.

This one!

Thanks chaps for all your advice, after which I realised my missus is currently issued with a Lenovo T61 for work, so had a go with that and decided it would do the job - it's certainly tough enough.

I managed to pick up a 2.2GHz jobbie on Ebay for £150.
