I fancy buying one of these little gizmos so I can have music on the move; the trouble is I know absolutely naff all about these things. The last personal music player I bought was an MD player about 10 years ago and they faded into posterity.

So what do I look for in an MP3 player? Can I download my CD collection to them? What would the collective recommend? Best place to buy one......

Thanking you all:thumb

A few questions to help people help you more easily:

Are you after something to carry your whole CD/vinyl collection around with you or just for a few tunes whilst on the bike or camping?
Is playing video/looking at pictures on the device at all important to you?
How important is small packsize/weight?
How important is robustness?

MP3

Had the same question myself so asked a teenager!
Have a look at the Zen by creative (Amazon) 8G holds about 2000 songs
downloads from PC easily just drag and drop.
thing for me was no batteries to replace and nice big screen
lasts ages on one charge.
Cheers

After a few mp3 players I went for the basic ipod, and never looked back, I would recommend them to anyone.

What mobile phone have you got? a lot of them have the capability of playing MP3 tracks, it doesnt need to be a smartphone :thumb2

How important is small packsize/weight? Well I want to carry it round in the tankbag or somewhere convenient on the bike
How important is robustness? Fairly important

Actually...

There 'is' something to discuss. If you get an iPod, make sure it's solid state, not a 'classic'.

The hard drive ones won't last long in a tank bag.

Funny, but one of the reasons I originally got a Creative Zen (only 1Gb but that wa s lot 5 years ago) was because it took one Pencil (AAA) battery that would last alll day, no charger when ya out in the middle of nowhere.... However I have moved onto Ipods now, they really are the dogs...even though I feklkin hate itunes with a vengeance.

Err Lord Snooty...what satnav do you use ? ( if you use one of course)
I now have music running off my Garmin Zumo SD card.

Advice from my 21yr old

The Creative Zen 8gb from Amazon

Cracking piece of kit even I can manage to download onto it

Works a treat

ipod classic, 160GB.
I've got about 12000 songs on mine, mostly in lossless format rather than mp3 so better quality, and 19GB to spare which is good as I've got quite a few more to add yet.
It will easily play all day long and I keep mine inside my jacket so it's safe from knocks and rain.

I would buy another if need be. I've had a few different players but this one is by far the best I've tried.
Hopefully it will last until they bring out a 320GB solid state player at a reasonable price (i.e. a good few years hence).

My satnav is also steam driven as it is a Streetpilot III - most of my technology is pre-historic:blast

As I said! my knowledgable teenager says Itunes is a pain in the bum!

+1. Itunes is (and has been, since the early iterations) one of the most annoying pieces of junk I've come across in the software world. Doubtless someone will pipe up that they have had one for years with no problems, but I have been roped into fixing six different friends' computers due to that damned program and I know plenty of other IT bods who report the same thing. Apple's MP3 players themselves aren't too bad, although the usual accusations of style over content and poor manufacturer support for what is ultimately a premium product can be levelled at them. It's the needing to use Itunes that makes me ward people off them.

I would suggest one of the smaller capacity, solid state players from Creative. The 8GB Zen Style would probably fit the OP's requirements well and it is reasonably priced. http://uk.store.creative.com/entertainment-devices-mp3-players/zen-style-100/948-19239.aspx
