Which O/S

As much as at pains me to say so, yes XP home edition is the best choice. I loathe paying the Windows tax to Bill Gates but they have a good product.

Even if you do go for XP you don't need to pay more Microsoft tax than you need to. For example, OpenOffice 2.0 is a superb word/spreadsheet/presentation package - www.openoffice.org - and is completely free of charge.

If home use and gaming wasn't a major factor then I'd suggest one of the many Linux distributions - Suse 10 being my current favourite.

I have to agree here. If games playing is your thing, then you have to go for Window$ XP, and if you do use this as your sole O/S, then definitely go for OpenOffice 2.0 it's compatible with M$ Office file systems, so you can import or read Word, Excel, etc.
Another option would be to partition your hard drive and use XP for games and install Linux, (SuSE 10 is an Excellent choice as Mike has already said), on another partition for Internet, etc. :thumb

AAMOI why would you want to do that?

i've been thinking of doing just that, but can't think what purpose it would serve other than giving me a headache so i haven't :eek

in answer to the main question. if you have to ask, it HAS to be xp.
