I am not to sure about keepin my bmw touring panniers that came with my 1150 (pictured) as they dont seem so big as Nicks Gobi by Hepco and Becker ones (pictured).
Also since they open up side on and not through the top that seems more difficult to load so much into them as Nicks.
He says that I should sell my set up and have his then he can have new ones for his new bike which may happen next yr if it is possible :mmmm Incidently he likes those big metal ones that lots of you use, I call them sandwich boxes, lol!
I have seen ones like mine fetch quite a good price on Ebay but not really sure what to do to be honest as its not like we do lots of heavy touring anyway like a lot of you peeps on here but are planning on doing a few campin trips next yr via this site so I do need at least what I have got....I can carry the light stuff like the toothbrushes :augie :D
What do you guys use and or prefer and why ?

I prefer a top opening pannier rather than a side option pretty much for the reasons you've mentioned for Nick.

Easier to access when out on the road and easier to pack on the bike.

The Gobi's are a great pannier, the only downside compared to an aluminium sandwich box as you call them is you lose capacity with the twin wall construction. If you want to maximise capacity go for aluminium.

As a compromise sell your system ones and the Gobis but keep the racks from Nicks and get a set of Hepco panniers in aluminium. :aidan

I have Gobi's fitted on my GS; they have great capacity, despite the double walled construction, and are also very light but exceptionally strong. Top-loading is a definite advantage with this type......my ideal panniers would be black Metal Mules which are on the shopping list :augie, hopefully next year for our Hebridean adventure ! Have to say though, the Gobi's look great on your bike ! :thumb2
happy riding!

Tupperware?

Surely the Gobi panniers have more in common with a tupperware sandwich box than an aluminium set? :nenau ;) :augie

I've got a gobi top box for day to day shopping and commuting. It's a decent size and light but I'd rather take ally boxes touring for their strength (for off-roading) and security, hence my recently aquiring a set of ARD cases (see vendors of innovations). IMO they're a bargain at around £450 for the panniers and TT frames :thumb2

Some interesting info, cheers. Put one of my bmw touring ones on this morning just to have another look at them and have to say not a lot of room in them compared to Nicks Gobi ones, I can see me swaying towards the change around with it all even if they do tend to stick out that bit more, I will just have to keep reminding myself to give myself more room when fitted, I have heard a few people say when filtering and having forgotton about the extra width
Its the metal mules that Nick likes and wants :)

Its swings and roundabouts really. The system BMW panniers don't hold as much as others but are really easy to put on/off and when off there are no rails to ruin the look of your bike. The Gobi ones (which looks ace by the way), hold more, look nice when fitted but are probably a pain to take on and off and have frames like your front gate when not fitted.

I have some Touratech Sandwich boxes which hold loads but virtually no security and a set of system panniers. This year I tool my sandwhich boxes to Prague with me and packed them with stuff I didn't need and took my system panniers to the Black Forrest and Alps with a holdall on the rear seat.

It would be nice to see a pic of the Gobi pannier frames when the boxes are not fitted. hint hint:augie

HAve Fun

Every time I've seen a set of the aluminium Gobis they always look lop-sided

Sandwich boxes...lol, looks as though I have started a trend for the new name :)
Know what you mean re the large frames, still umming and r-ing about the whole thing. Went down to the bikes earlier and the gobi's looking favourable simply as more room really, not too bad in putting on and off, if my 12 yr old daughter can do it then I really dont have any excuse do I...eek.
The Gobi top box looks huge on my bro in laws ktm adv, dont think I will bother with a top box, nick can have that extra wieght :)

Little Beemer

I recently sold my system panniers on the site, lent the good fella a key to get them home then he posted the key back to me. Do you really want a spare set of keys for your bike floating about?
As for panniers, I have now fitted the ADV boxes what a difference to the system panniers in terms of space, no mods needed to the exhaust or indicators.:thumb2
