Which panniers?

If your not camping or going off road .

In what way? Friendy question, just that as I have done both with mine and didn't have any apparent issues. Assume this is about weight distribution?

The varios are a pain to load as already been said, if you have an off with varios on hard ground they will often crack or break beyond repair where alloy ones can normally be beaten straight. I think both my boxes and frame work weigh less than one vario, doesn’t matter really when the bikes are as heavier as they are but alloy boxes are loads more versatile than varios. I toured and camped with varios for years but would never go back to them after using alloy boxes.

Thanks. Makes sense, and for sure the varios are a ridiculous weight. Given that I very infrequently use panniers and top boxes, and so would only infrequently have put on / remove the scaffolding, I fancy that were I in the market now I would perhaps look at the alternatives.

I only ever fit mine for camping and trips away. I would never have a top box ever, I hate the look of them and never found the need for them, I think that stems for the old white stadium ones they used to have in the 70’s and 80’s and now I don’t want to look like I work for deliveroo. I pack light from having small enduro bikes and kept the same philosophy. I use a dry bag on the rack which has all my clothes, footwear and wash gear in, then all my camping and cooking kit goes in the panniers, this way if I’m travelling and don’t want to camp I just leave the panniers locked on the bike and carry one bag into the hotel. I don’t put my tent or sleeping bag across the back of the bike. I leave the frames on to protect the Akro for when I drop it. I thought I would hate the look without the boxes but I don’t notice them now. But my bike is no princess.

Just checked the weight of the bmw alu panniers against the varios. less than 200g difference per side?

With the scaffolding the alu solution is slightly heavier.

Varios
Empty weight left pannier 5.780 kg
Empty weight right pannier 5.880 kg

Alu
Empty weight left pannier 5.92 kg
Empty weight right pannier 5.92 kg

Not surprising, Bmw boxes are heavy, I can only compare my mundos which seem weigh lighter (see what I did there) but I use the smallest ones they do 38/31 I think.

Varios definitely felt lighter with one in each hand, even though only just!
I liked the ‘boxes’ but not the scaffolding and that is what swung it in the end as I spend most of the time pannierless.
