Which router please ?..........

My daughter has just moved into a house which has cable TV/Phone, on the 'Virgin' network. She wants to use her laptop computer wirelessly.

Am I right in thinking, that you need certain routers for certain ISPs ?

If so, could anyone please recommend a router which will work on her Virgin cable setup.

Not sure about the Virgin accessablility but I`d strongly reccomend a Netgear 834G wireless router. Had mine nearly 2 years and never had to re-boot once, very reliable.

I had Virgin (was NTL) in my house in Cardiff. Their cable modem will have a standard ethernet output. You can connect any router/switch into this to share the connection. I bought a Linksys job, which worked fine, sharing the connection between 5 computers.

Incidentally, if you get a router from Virgin then it might be a Netgear one. I'm now using their ADSL service via a BT phone line and they have supplied a Virgin badged Netgear 834G. Whilst this router will work fine with a cable modem, it has a built in ADSL modem which you do not need. You can probably save a few quid by buying a wifi router without the ADSL function.

It's 802.11g, which has been replaced with a newer protocol. It will work fine in a home environment: it will certainly keep up with the rate at which Virgin are prepared to throw the data at you...
