Which Shock Absorber is Best?

Is it correct that wilbers come with a 5 year guarantee.....

.
But the guarantee is void if they aren't serviced annually at a wilbers agent :augie

No mention of that when I got mine... they do recommend that they're serviced.. or whatever, every two years... But i won't bother with that palaver either.. when they're felt by me to have 'gone off' - I will put the original Showas back on and trundle down to halesowen and get the chaps there to rebuild them. will be interesting to see how long it takes for them to 'go off' particularly as I over specified them when ordered.

what about WP or fournales or technoflex ? anyone got any info on them ?

i have on order a hyperpro

will let you know how it all works when i get it, and fit it

I have Fournales front and rear on my donkey, and they've been on there for about 140,000 miles.I saw the back one about two months ago,and it still looed like new.

I don't go in for all this bolox of adjustable everything, because unless you are riding round and round a track where you can set them up properly,it's a complete waste of time, and besides that, most people don't know their arse from their elbow when it comes to suspension,so you can ignore 99% of what you read on tinternet.

I put 29bar in my back one when I put it on about 6 years ago,and as far as I know,it's all still there.

The only down side I can think of with them,is that if the seal goes pop, then you're bugggered, well and truley,no spring to ride home on(but I'm a brave bunny)

I agree, the only thing I fiddle with is preload when I'm carrying loads of camping gear etc as I usually ride solo.

Thanks for all the replies everyone, the info is proving very helpfull, especially with Wilbers (new brand to me!) and the UKGSER discount :)

Hi Andy,
with your UKgser's discount you can get the front and basic rear for under £400 each, built to order exactly taylored to you off us!!!!

Go for this. I did and it transformed my 1100. Every Accessory were great to deal with, top service, great value and quality product. Definitely recommend them 100%.:)

Feedback at Horizons about Hagon shocks was not good.

I agree with all of that.. and as the OP is 'tarmac only' can i recommend he consider fitting a hugger which will protect the shock from road muck.. also means you can really tidy up the rear end of the bike by removing the next to useless crud catcher (the one that doesn't)

OBDURAN - nope, I will move into the 21st Century when I have got to grips with the intricacies of the newfangled internal combustion engine and electricity.

That will be some time around 2020.:rob

Off to put some more coal on the boiler......

Heaven forbid that you stumble accross the latest communications gizmo - the Personal Computer connected to the Interweb... there'll be no stopping you :D:D

How'd you find the pyramid hugger? Does it stop the crud getting blasted onto the shock etc?

This is why I recommended it john. It keeps the shock completely clean. Great for me as the cost of the shocks was a tad scary and I wanted to protect them. And as i said means removal of the rear crud catcher is the obvious plus. It's only worth considering if you never go off road. I don't.

The Shocks have been in place for almost a year now - and have never needed even a wipe. The hugger itself gets very dirty in the wet - but just needs a rinse down and 'job done'.

If you're more fussy than I am then you may (may) find that the hugger needs a little trimming off on the exhaust side. (dremel?) going over sharp road humps there's an occasional knock where it hits the (original) exhaust. I haven't bothered. The thing is so lightweight there's no possibility of any damage. just a few mm taken off would cure this completely.

Hi Everyone,

Could some of you help me with some info?

I have a R1100GS and the front and rear shockers are knackered. I have looked through old posts and a lot of people have had problems with Ohlins, but some say they are the best..

To this end I have a couple of Questions;

What are the best shockers to put on my bike on a budget of about 400 Pounds Each?

And where is best to buy them from?

Im not an off roader, but i like to hammer along on bumpy B roads.

Cheers all :beerjug:

I think Maxton shocks are a decent price for their quality, try bike revival for options
or just whack a full set of ohlins on the credit card!:drool

I run a White Power on the rear of my 1100, it works well and has done for a long time, it can be rebuilt for £65 plus parts when the time comes, the economy option for the front is to post here on the for sale and wanted section and get hold of a front from an 1150, they are a slightly improved item over the 1100 originals and these rich Ohlins guys will have them lurking at the back of the garage :thumb2

Hi Everyone,

I am keeping an eye on Ebay,:type

I have also being looking at Hagon units, are they any good?

Im guessing by the price that they may not have the performance of the Ohlins/Wilbers but at £270 front and £395 rear they are in my budget.

Cheers

If you go for a hagon unit, pay extra and buy the one with the remote adjuster.
the standard rear shocker has the spring adjuster on the top part of the shock.
so if you like to alter your spring rate you have to remove the shock...Hagon didnt realy think this design over very well to be user friendly..

I have the standard showa rear shocker with hyperpro spring fitted , works fine and you still have the original remote spring rate adjuster to play with.

you can remove the standard spring, but you need a heavy duty spring compressor to do the job.

hope this helps

My local dealer has been offering Pyramid huggers as an option on new 1200GSs and they've been breaking (snapping off) with alarming regularity - they had 3 in waiting to be sent back when I was there. Not sure whether the 1150 ones are the same, but the 1200 ones are ABS that's too thin to withstand the vibration. They now recommend the Ilmberger carbon fibre one instead - it's more expensive but you fit it and it stays fitted.......
