Which? Stripper???

Well, now I have your attention, no its not that sort of stripping!
What is the best way of removing the lacqer coat of wheels, so I can polish the alloy rims to remove the horrible staining/pitting that has apeared on the wheels of my otherwise mint gs1100??

Correct me if I'm wrong ...

... but I didn't think the wheels on the 1100 were laquered, hence why they get pitted so easily; Tarka (the toothbrush) will be along in a while to contradict me, but I'm off to bed and don't care :D

The early bikes had bare ally rims and then went to annodised in 96 (i think :nenau ). my old 1100 (a 95) had bare rims.

ta v much rob mine is a '99 and looks well lacquered to me!
 
They should be anodised not lacquered. It could be somebody has had a go in the past.

My late 96 are deffo laquered and look shite... I have'nt botherd to clean them up "maybe one day". I've used paint stripper (nitromors) to remove laquer from some early jap engines and pitted wheels, washed down with plenty of water and a really fine wet'n'dry paper to remove some pitting, then plenty of polishing with the solvosol. :thumb

Yup that just about described the state of the wheel rims.....anything I need to be particularly careful about using nitromors on the rims, keep it off tyres, spokes I suppose as a start, have n't used it for a long time but seem to recall it was pretty nasty stuff back then, or have they changed to a less effective but more PC formula???

When I done mine, I had a bucket of water handy and the hose pipe ready as well. do small amounts of the wheel at a time plenty of washing down after each strip, when you get down to the polish bit use one of those green type kitchen scourers with plenty of auto sol till your fingers ache.. then use the finest wet n dry paper before the final polish session.
You can get just as good result, if you smear your wet n dry paper with auto sol polish rather than water. :thumb
 
cheers northengit....as i expected it is going to be down to grafting 'til its done.....1 wheel at a time I think starting with the rear and see how it goes
 
These were the wheels on my 95 1100 :cool: It took some serious autosoling to keep them like that.

wow that looks great!
I expect I will try to cheat a bit to keep mine polished by using mop polishing set and "lotion" just obtained from Frosts! :D
