Thought I'd check out the collective wisdom here for any previous experiences:

2610, V4.70 SW & 2.10 Audio, V8 CN Europe, IR DISABLED

Spent a week in Norway, where the first three days made me feel like changing my name to Noah, then it dried out a treat. However once the rain stopped the 2610 kept switching into "pan" mode accompanied by the same "click" you get when you touch the screen. Check IR was disablled, and it was, and I wasn't getting the old "3 beeps" problem associated with IR. This still happens at home off the AC power, but not as often, and sometimes takes an hour before it does it. Sometimes when it's switched into pan mode, even pressing the "Page" key won't switch it back - and you get a "beep beep-beep-beep".

Also, sometimes in the pan mode the screen would "shake" as if someone had their finger on the screen and was moving it side to side very quickly.

I reckon the touch screen is toast. I've used the web form to ask Garmin what to do, but wondered if anyone else has had the same problem. I haven't heard back yet, and off to Spain in 2 weeks / 2 days, and if it's not fixed will be very disapointed. How long do they usually take to respond / repair stuff?

Cheers

Mark

yes, I've had that 'shaking' problem and it's the touch screen.

I had real problems contacting Garmin by phone and the web form. I suggest you email Phil.Elliott -AT- garmin.com and ask for a return number. Turnaround for me was less than a week.

They don't look at the web form. You might enver get through by telephone either. Best method is to send a letter and special delivery the unit to them. Expect to wait 6 weeks for any kind of acknowledgement if its like my Quest return.

We've seen various posts about garmin and there after service which generally is very good we will all agree.

Some have had bad experiences but there all there to try and help us in some way be it on the phones, email or repairing the units which we use quite well.

In some ways we get responses straight away some have to wait quite a while but mostly they end up helping you.

others may shout at this but lets not have a go at them and moan all the time. The end of the day there a huge company and the guys in romsey cover the whole of europe for support and that is alot of people.

I don't want to start any arguments i am just pointing this out.

Hi Markie:

Have a close look around the edges of the touch-screen, where the screen contacts the frame (bezel) that surrounds it. Check carefully to see if there is a piece of scuzz of some kind (bit of a leaf, whatever) wedged in there between the edge of the touchscreen and the frame. I had that happen once, and it gave me exactly the same problems that you have described.

The way to fix it is simple and easy:

1) Fill a washbasin up with warm soapy water.

2) Put the GPSR into the water - submerge it totally. Then, using a soft toothbrush, gently scrub around the edges of the touchscreen, to remove any gunk that might be there. Keep the GPSR under water while you do this.

3) Drain the sink, rinse the GPSR off under the tap (use cool water), then dry the GPSR off with a soft bath towel.

4) Leave it sitting on a counter overnight, with the screen facing up, to dry.

5) Test it out the next day, and see if your problem has disappeared.

This might save you the trouble of having to return the unit for repair.

Pan / All,

Thanks for the idea. I'll check it out tonight, and "free" is always worth a try.

I am in contact with Phil, and having an e-mail exchange, so we'll see where that leads as well.

cheers

Mark
