Anyone know where I can buy a small tube of the thick white sealing paste that is smeared on the sealing faces of the boot covering the join between the final drive and swing arm?

I've looked in the Reprom and it quotes a brand rather than the type of grease.

BMW Part # 07 55 9 062 476

its castrol optimol ,motorworks sell it it mate,i think it was about a tenner,it is put on the splines between the final drive and the driveshaft,as far as i know nothing goes on the rubber flexi boot.:thumb2

Thanks Mike.

The Reprom says the part number is 07 55 9 056 992 for the rear final drive gaiter and the front is the same as you quoted.

Also, I'd like to pick to pick some up today and the dealers don't open on Sunday.

I have the tube of Optimol from Motorworks but it's the white grease that I'm looking for. I dropped the FD down last week as there was water dripping from the arm (it was pooling at the back, just before the pivot) and I noted that there was just a smear of the grease around the boot, whereas pictures I've seen show a good thick coating.

I could put a squirt from my tube into an email if you want. :D

Thanks for the offer, but I'm not sure I'd want any squirts from your tube...........................

for red rubber grease. Seems to have done the job for the last six months.
Got a small sachet of Red Lockheed brake rubber grease from local Halfords in the summer. Maybe try a local store or a motorfactors should have some.

Thanks for the suggestion - the red rubber stuff is suitably thick.

I'll get some.

It's not waterproof, which is the main property and point of the white stuff.

Thanks, I didn't realise.

I'll put it off until next weekend.

Red rubber grease might not be fully waterproof but it can't be that bad. A good lathering under brake caliper dust seals allows the main seal to last a lot longer before alloy corrosion forces another strip-down.

I suspect its very similar to the stuff you put on a babies bottom to avoid nappy rash. a zinc based waterproof grease.

Hadn't thought of that but suspect you're correct.

Have asked Balderstons for a price on pukka stuff. However, i'll go with your suggestion if nothing comes back.

Mike was right first time, MP3 paste replaces the original paste.

However, there is none available from Motorrad - next deliveries Jan 2014, at £24.00 per 100gm.

Seems the BMW dealer I contacted uses white marine grease, not MP3 grease. They also recommended Putoline too.

I have a large tub of elbow grease you could have a dip in, its not been used for some time....:thumby:
