Vines (where I will probably buy from) say that they don't fit Datatool - only Meta - but I've had a bad experience with a Meta on a ZX6R and would prefer a Datatool (I also prefer the workshop mode on the Datatool).

Do Mobitec fit them purchance? Heard a lot of good things about him.

Datatool !!! ???

NOOOOOOOOOO !!!

Crap - rubbish and shite .

I used to fit them to new bikes .

Then change them when they went wrong ...

or drained the battery....

or cut -out in the fast lane .....

then removed them on used bikes to sell in the showroom - why ? cos we didn't sell a used bike with a crap alarm !!

Phil

( of course - they might be better now )

I'm pretty sure that SLM in Caterham will fit them. I think that's what my bike came with but now that you've said that I can't remember.

LOL - if your info is anything more than 3 years old I'm going to ignore you. :D

I agree there's lots of different views on alarms and with ANY system you'll have bad experiences.

I don't actually want an alarm but need it for the insurance.

I've had bad experience with a Meta too...and as for Datatool...don't get me started. I would plump for Spyball. Mobitec do those.

I got Mobitec to fit auxiiliary wiring which bypasses the alarm so that when the control unit packs up (they all do eventually) I can isolate it by undoing some connectors and carry on as if the alarm had never been fitted. Theoretically this could help a thief to bypass the alarm, but unless they're reading this and they know where I live they wouldn't know to even try, so that doesn't concern me. What I worry about is being let down by the alarm in the middle of the Sahara or wherever...

that's a thought - good idea.

Change your insurance company then!

Carole Nash only upped my insurance by £30 for not having one fitted.

I booked a fitting for the Datatool then did an internet search. I was horrified and cancelled straight away:

Alarms failing whilst abroad.

Extra time to fit to a GS due to invasive wiring and complexity of de-constructing your bike.

Alarm cutting ignition at speed.....etc etc etc.

NO THANKS!

Insurance!

My insurance company would only give me a discount of £8.00 a year if I were to fit an alarm and imobiliser!!!

Needless to say I didn't bother!

Check with your insurance company before having any such device fitted.

It seems a lot of money to pay out for very little discount!:P

In some areas of the country, you have no choice but to fit an alarm/immobilisor. Otherwise, you won't get insured.

Had a Datatol 3 fitted as original equiptment to a Triumph I used to own. What a pain in the neck. Definitely more trouble than it was worth, especially at fuel stops. If possible, I would pay a touch more for insurance, than buy a Datatool alarm, which will definitely p**s you off.

I had a Datatool on my old VFR, the only problem was if you stopped and armed the bike anywhere near Birmingham Airport and tried to dissarm it, it refused due to interference from the airport!

On speaking to Datatool they stated that this would happen at any location with high radio transmisions and that if it happened again I should push the bike for about 1/2 a mile and try to dissarm again!

What!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And! It wasn't very loud!

And ! Everyone would ignore you, even if you were pushing the bike away with the alarm going off! ( trying to dissarm)

I even had an alarm called a "Big mouth" many years ago which would shout" Attention this bike is being stolen ! " when activated.

It was stolen three weeks after having it fitted from outside my address!

Another vote for Spyball, if you have to have one...

I thought Spyball had gone bust??

This is going to be a NEW bike, and will be used to commute into central London - if you can find an underwriter willing to do a sensible quote without an alarm then please tell me who!!

(also there's 2 other bikes on the policy).

Thought it was time to check with Pat at Mobitec in case I was talking bollocks - he says "the latest Datatool is the best. 300 quid fitted. Spyball went out of business some time ago. Datatool have continued improving no end. They're no 1 now."

nothing like up to date info.. ;)

I take it that Mobitec fit the Datatool then??

What's his number?

Sorry, typed the price wrong - it's 350. Pat is on 07779 528715. Ask for the Eurostar special discount scheme.

is that a recomendation or an advert?

SPC said they'd fit a datatool for £300 to a bike i was looking at buying from them.

Given their reluctance to do a deal on a secondhand bike, you may find that if you're not buying a bike from them they'll fit it for £200 :D (only joking)

Anyway, I had a spyball which was unbelievably crap. In fact I think it acted as a theft deterrent purely in that no one would nick the bike because it would break down immediately, drain the battery and they couldn't face trying to remove the mess which was the wiring loom...

edit coz i cant spell
