Who races their bike?

My brother races his not me. You have to question BMW's marketing department with regards to warranties and racing of their bikes. One of the main driving factors for me buying a G450x was the warranty. But if you "race" your bike the warranty is voided. I ride my bike harder on weekends sometimes than I would in a race, so I don't understand the logic. Also if you want exposure surely the race track would be the best place.

Now all you have is the occasional rider taking a chance hoping nobody will catch him racing his bike, and the factory teams. Also what are BMW trying to say by voiding the warranty if you race it, the bikes not good enough ?

I didn't know the Warranty was void if you raced the bike! i thought it was only if the message came up on the speedo saying that it had been over revved for a period of time. I've had parts replaced under warranty with no problems what so ever, my bike has actually had race numbers on it when it has gone in for repair.

Well I'm in South Africa it might be different there. The shit we put up with this side. Also I know over the pond you are allowed to service your own bike and retain warranty if you buy original parts, that does not fly here. Would be curious to know if that is the case in the UK please let me know what you find out Sammo.

UPDATE: Just spoken to one of the main dealers here, and they said warranties are the same wherever the G450's are sold. And for then the term race means ANY timed event. I've spoken to a mate of mine who is a workshop manager and he said there is know way they could tell that a bike has been raced or not.

I have done all my own servicing with BMW parts and oil bought from the dealer, this is all you need to keep the warranty valid.

Dave

Same here.

Race G450X

I race my 450 (and green lane it to)

It is the most unreliable dirt bike I have ever owned, however my dealer has always sorted out the problems. I have nevered had to pay for a thing.

New rear wheel, throttle body, wiring loom, handle bars, clutch, alternator and the list goes on. I have a 11 hour old engine complete with throttle body and ecu and many spare. I like the bike, got it set up and its competitive, just need to see if it will keep running for two days in a row!!!

did they let you keep the replaced parts? i.e. spare engine. what happened to the original bars? surely that wasn't BMW's fault. I have burned the clutch out on one of my 450's also there was an issue with a bolt coming loose on the alternator i think. Rear wheel? what happened there?

don't know if i'm a racer but i do some enduro competition (but im always down at the list :blast. do some rally stuff and som green laning.
got 100 hours on it and no problems.. today its at the dealer to check the valves. has't don it in 50 hours..... but the first 50 hours everything was in spec.....

i love the bike

the valves are perfekt in place after 100 hours and never been changed in those 100 hours.(last time we checked was at 50 hours).

rear wheel bearing is not as good any more, so there wille be new one pressed in.
steering beaering and front wheel are still ok.

Me happy.

I purchased the engine from ebay, it came with the throtle body and the ecu. The handle bars had a grove in them were the throttle cable had worn through. The wheel bearings collapesed during an Eastern Centre round at Little Hadham

The good thing is, all the items that have been fixed come with a new 2 year warranty!

Just wonder who races their 450 and how they get on ?

I hopefully will be doing some TBEC, CHEC and Enduroland events once the summer is over and it gets muddy again (which knowing the UK will be August :blast )

It will be interesting to see how the beemer compares to the 200EXC which was my previous iron. :augie I did 2 years on that with only one issue which was a blown fork seal. To be honest I'm not the fastest rider in the world but that said I'm not the slowest either.

The GX has been a much better green laner so far but I wonder how it will cut it in the tight woods sections at these events?

Hi I just bought a g450x last week to race in enduro's and H&H and a little greenlaning, hell I'll even race some mx on it if I think its good enough. The bikes got a remus pipe on and I've fitted the plug for full power tho I'll fit a switch to the bars so I can switch between the two on the fly. What other mods will I need, heard about 5.0 springs and 14/50 gearing (mines 13/48).

There is no point, the ECU only detects the link when it first boots up and sets the power accordingly. I does not change if you add or remove the link once booted.

I just mounted a switch under the side panel tied to the frame. If you need to change the power when out you will need to turn off the engine and then wait a few min for the ECU to shut down (I think you hear the servo's winding back and the display goes out)

Then flick the switch.

You can then start the bike and the ECU will boot in the new power mode.

Little tip, dont buy a plastic switch. Mine fell to bits after the 1st trip

Go to your local motor store and get one of the metal single pole toggle switches, cost me £1. Wire it all up and then I put a rubber cover over the SW and covered it all in heat shrink, then cable tied it to the frame.

Also dont forget to mark where the closed (full power) postition is before you fit it. I used some white paint.

Enjoy!

Cheers mate I think leave it on full power and see how it goes, just waiting for the new reg number arriving as the bike came from the IOM and I'll get out on it:thumb2.

you live at seaham in co durham?

you can get out with us on some lanes if you fancy it

I just completed a full Irish enduro season on mine including 2 two day events and a couple of hare and hounds, no DNF's and no problems despite a few hard knocks. Only issue was breaking the soft side stand bolt early in the year while it was just sitting there.
I fitted switch on the power plug so as to have the option on really tough goin, think i only switched over once during year and it seemed to stall easier if not quick enough on clutch.
Running 14/51 gearing which works well in most situations.
Dropped the froks about 7 mm and turns better in tight stuff.
Decent bash plate and rad guard.
Leo vince can which is still nice and quiet.
