Who's servo is fine?

Thought i'd start this out of interest (may be only of interest to me, but there you go). I've a 2004 GSA (70k miles) with servo abs. Brakes are great and had no issues but always had that paranoia about them due to lots of internet negativity about potential failure.

Obviously one mostly hears about the problem bikes, so thought i'd ask the opposite question to see if there's loads of people have not had a failure.

Who's servo is still good and what is the age and milage of your bike.

Had 2004 rt for 2 years 25000ml no issues accept bearing collapse in gearbox

04 GS Adv 121000km, no servo or brake issues.

A 2004 1150 adventure with 41,000 Kms and no issues. I also have a 2005 SE 1150 which suffered a servo failure while in for a service with two weeks to go on warranty . The replacement is still going strong at 78,000 Kms. My mechanic insists that the fluid needs to be replaced every 12 months to keep servo going.

If you do complete fluid changes every year no matter what mileage It Will stay good

I agree entirely with Luke's Mech I strongly believe that the damage is done when Brake fluid becomes contaminated with water ingress Heat degradation etc etc

I'm with you, regular changes of fluid are the key, mine is 12 years old now and no problems so far.

Which MY bikes came with a servo on the brakes ? My low miles 02 has ABS but not sure if it has servo assist.

My 2005 GSA working fine, never had any problems, Had a 2001 K1200RS for 6 years again no problems.

Mine had a new system fitted just before I bought it the guy also gave me the old unit if it gives any problem I will just take it off

I read somewhere that the clutch fluid on 1150's is not the dot 4 type brake fluid but some type of oil if you get my drift.
Of course I may be talking total bollocks and it really is brake fluid.


Oh....and 90k miles and servo still perfect on my 52 plate 1150.

I owned my 2004 servo ABS GS from new until last year and never had any servo problems.
As above, I was told very early on to have the fluid changed every 12-months and it seems to have worked.

Funny thing was that a forum member was thinking of buying my bike (I traded it in for a Stelvio NTX) and other forum members were putting him off buying it owing to the supposed servo issues, this despite the fact that it had a 100% reliability record and I had told him of the 12-monthly fluid changes.

Removed but still working fine. Personally I don't want it to fail randomly and potentially cause me to crash, but more importantly, the servo brakes are feckin awful. No feel, whine like a bitch on hill starts and I just dislike them....lots. Older Abs was a good system and when it failed the brakes were still good.

I'd thought of doing it myself but I'm told and have read its a PITA due to the ABS system.

Done mine recently and it's not difficult at all if you follow the instructions but you will need to make up some wooden spacer blocks for front/rear and a funnel with the correct fitting for the servo filler points.
I was lucky and bought a bike which came with the appropriate service parts and associated instructions but I think that all the details are available on ADV Rider wisdom page?
My totally non technical partner (think kittens and fluffy clouds ) assisted me and everything went as it should without any domestics!
The history on my bike shows that it has been flushed every 2 years and when I done it over the winter the old fluid was as clean as the new fluid that went in...45k miles and still ok

I've done 60k miles on my 2003 1150gs since new. The only issue has been warning light coming on once which was due to incorrect fluid level in the unit. Topped up and OK since then. Removed and re-installed unit last year when replacing badly corroded battery tray with no problems.
Fluid is changed every 12 months. Personally I've never used the wooden spacing blocks (as per ADV rider thread), though I know there are differing views on this. Fluid change takes about 45 mins (without calliper clean up). Useful to have a selection of spanners (7mm if I recall) open ended and ring. Also a good cheap filler funnel can be made using slightly undersized plastic funnel with a couple of turns of amalgamation tape on the end. This then cuts a thread into the tape when twisted into the filler holes.
Now stick coils? That's another story!!!!!!!!!
