It all makes sense now.
Holding the button still resets it, so the reason it appears to be changing as you accelerate/decelerate is that it is calculating the new average.
Why 47.8 mpg ?

reset at each fill up. Mostly the same route but also includes little jaunts on the A3. If i do the computer thing I get it to around 2 mpg of the computer. got a reading of 47 odd on the way to belgium earlier this year, two up, loaded. worked it out by topping up over two tankfuls, and the real figure was 41.
