Why a GS?

This thread has finally drawn me out .....

As a long time "lurker" on the site, I had to post on this one - I live in the Pyrénées (not far from Biarritz) and am off to test ride a GS this morning!

The roads and trails here are absolutely fantastic and I spend a lot of time exploring the mountains to go rock climbing - I think arriving and exploring with a GS will be the icing on the cake!

To me the difference between GS types and other touring bikes or bikes with touring potential can be summed up like this;

On the latter types, the bike is really for getting to any destination.

On a GS, there isn't a destination. Wherever the bike is, feels like a destination with another destination within a wheel rotation and another and another......

Buying in France

Just remember that there is no MOT test here nor road fund licence. I would NOT buy nor sell privately. I also agree that although the 1150GS would seem to be ideal the 1200GS is really MUCH better. Best of luck, Brian in France

What ROLLO said basically.

Except for MPG - I had the st1100 for 5 years and did around 50,000 miles on it - kneedown scratching to touring, and all the servicing .

I don't think the pan was as good on gas tbh, although mpg drops on the GSA 1150 when you ride hard.

I have done the pyrenees on the GSA with mates on sportsbikes and the GS stuck with or left everything on all but the straighter stretches.

I wouldn't have swapped at any time.
They LAUGH at roads where other bikes tremble and so will you.

They are supremely easy to ride, simple to service, and so far an utter joy to own.

I've had most kinds of bike in my 27 years of riding and this is really as good as it gets.
Headlights are USELESS mind you.
