Why can't my 2610 communicate with me via my Autocom.

My 2610 is wired into an 'always on' switched supply. That it, it's only live when the ignition is on. OK, there are some disadvantages, but I'm happy.

I have run the relevant Autocom lead from the GPS back to the Autocom Pro 7 which is mounted in my tool tray under the seat. The cable is about 20 cms shorter than I'd like, but nonetheless it's there.

The cable goes in the little black isolator box that also accepts my phone, should I wish to use my phone.

However, I hear not a squeak from Gertie Garmin. I wondered if I'd got the sound turned off, but no. In the car, using the Garmin car lead, I can clearly hear the routing instructions.

I have tried both the A and B sockets of the isolator box to see if that's the point of error.

I'm flummuxed!

I would say your problem will be down to the ol Garmin power and audio problem where the jack plug does not supply a good connection to our 2.5mm jack plug.

So when we use to fit the 2610's, 2720's etc that all use the same power and audio leads we actually cut off the jack plug socket and our jack plug and hard wire the two joins together. The wiring will be as the below

Garmin Our interface lead

Red Not used
Black Not used
White Red
Brown Screen or the outer cable

This will give you a solid connection and fingers crossed get the nice lady talking to you. On the connections though make sure the lead is plugged into Socket A on the splitter or the lead will become very noisy as the B socket is for mobile phone use.

Could be the junction where the audio is split from the power on the Garmin power cable.
You would need a some headphones and a 2.5mm - 3.5mm converter from Maplin to test it though. I think that junction used to be weak spot.

Ive not heard of the weak spot before John but I guess it is something to look at. Maplin wise do they have them in the States?

OK.

I tried the wire welding as suggested, but still no noise.

So off I went to a friendly electronics boffin who applied his various test tools, got lots of buzzing and pronounce that the GPS - Autocom cable did not match the description given.

He sorted out which ones to use and all works perfectly, albeit only in one ear. He's going to design the appropriate circuits to enable me to hear the message in both ears.

He wasn't too impressed with Autocom's red/black isolator box device, mind. Shoddy circuit board and £1.99 transformers!

I kinda said I didn't care as long as it all worked.

Is sounds like something is still wrong then if you are only getting audio into one of your speakers so your boffin sounds like he knows what he is doing!!! So cable wise why didnt it match the description? Were/are you usingf a phone lead not a GPS lead?

Thank goodness for the search button:aidan

Just had exactly the same problem with my Autocom and Garmin 2610.

Everything is new except for the bike power lead for the GPS, this has been in place for years.

Bought all the cables and wired it up today and no sound from the GPS.

Plugged my Nokia into the Autocom lead and that worked so it wasn't the lead.
Plugged some 2.5mm headphones into the Garmin lead and I could hear the GPS:nenau

Plugged the GPS back into the Autocom and fiddled with the plug and socket and bingo, voices :clap

The problem seems to be that the Garmin socket doesn't marry up with the plug connectors by about 1 to 1.5 mm. So I made a rubber washer and put this on the plug so that it bridges the small gap, shimples:thumb
