why does the canbus do this?

if i start the bike with gps off, and heated jacket unplugged, then plug them in when engine running, after about 5 mins it decides 'No i'm not letting you run those' and turns them off.

But, If i plug the nice power hungry jacket in first when ignition is on but engine not running, then start engine, i get the battery symbol on for a bit, but it doesnt turn the sockets off!!

Surely it would be better to have engine running before i plug in my jacket and stuff as it means less overall current draw when starting the engine but the canbus doesnt like it this way!!

Ah the joys of modern technology lol

It sounds very much as if you're still running an old version of the ECU software. The latest upgrade (v7 ?) cures this problem which was introduced by the previous upgrade.

when was V7 released? I had bike serviced couple of months ago and a software update. Prior to this, heated jacket socket never went off (underseat socket), but GPS headstock socket didnt power down. Now i have both sockets powering off!! I think i prefered it before the update :)

I've been having similar problems and resorted to powering GPS staight from battery. I definitely have the latest s/w and the old problem was quite different although it did randomly turn the aux socket off.

I think it's because the battery voltage is a bit low and it is trying to shed some load to charge up the battery quickly.

With lower powered kit on the aux socket everything is OK, it's just the GPS seems to push it over the edge.

My impression was that the computer dumps all the extras, eg lights / heated grips / accessory sockets when the starter is pressed.

Yes, the computer turns off all additional accessories temporarily when the starter button is press so that the engine can turn over without the overall power draw.

What is the power draw of the heated jacket, as far as I remember the new software only allows up to 5 Amps off the accessory socket

Not sure what the power draw is, i got the kit from ebay (was recommended from this site somewhere) and made it myself!

The weird thing is it only allows the jacket to work if i have it plugged in prior to starting the engine, otherwise it shuts it off after 5 mins. I can live with it, just seems a strange situation
