It;s dead easy to find; from the Grote Markt (the main town square) it is but a couple of minutes walk. Take the Meensestraat going East and this becomes the Menensepoort (lit: Menen Gate) but you will see it long before then. :thumb

Ypres is now known as Ieper - going there for the May Day long weekend.:thumb

To the Flemish it has always been called Ieper.... Ypres is the French version!

Park in the Grote Markt with the other 100 bikes and then you have easy access to the Cloth Hall (and the "In Flanders Fields" Museum)towering over you and the Menin Gate is about 250 yards away.

This thread might help with waypoints. I've not got Mapsource here at work to test it - http://www.ukgser.com/forums/showthread.php?t=101901

Yup what they said sums up the buggers muddle of the langauges in this country: here's some others you might want on your way through:

French Flemish
Ypres Ieper
Gand Gent
Anvers Antwerp
Liege Luik
Louvain Leuven
Bruxelles Brussel
Malines Mechelen

depending on which part of the country you are driving in will depend on what you see on the road signs. Some places have both shown but often one or other has been sprayed out by graffitti - the locals don't like each other much :D

I'll be passing through on the way from Calais to a boozy weekend with some mates on Sat 2nd May.

Plan to be in Ieper for lunch. Probably head for the Lakenhalle as it will be easy for stragglers to find. Is there bike parking in that part of the Grotte Markt?

Parking in the Town square no problem on Sat afternoon and all day Sunday.

They have a market on Saturday mornings which is excellent, check out the food and clothing on sale, not a (with all due respect/politically incorrect etc etc etc) asian selling cheap immitation crap.

In fact last September there was a guy selling Rev-it bike gear

Wessie, we are taking the 1800 ferry from Dover on Friday 2nd so expect to arrive at Ieper about 21.30 ish. Will head for the Grote Markt to find a bar for a few beers. Saturday and Sunday we are heading out on the bikes to explore the battlefields and visit cemeteries. There are 19 of us all told, 12 bikes in all, mostly GSes. I will keep an eye out for:thumb

Of course, I meant Friday 2nd.

I'm in a mixed group of 42 bikes! The common factor is everyone reads the newsgroup uk.rec.motorcycles

We're all staying in a hotel close to the Belgian border east of Lille. I've no idea what I'll be doing on the Saturday, nursing a hangover probably. Some have suggested a trip to Bruges, others want to ride down to the Ardennes.

Mapsource

You may find this useful, just completed with the help of input from MikeP (thankyou Mike).

If you look at it on Mapsource, you can choose your routes and I have tried to include info on each Waypoint.

Any input from others would be greatly appreciated - checking of co-ordinates in real time, any other places worth seeing, etc..

I will not accept any responsibility for inaccurate information - done the best I can until I get over there.

Updated copies would be greatly appreciated.

Garmin have messed up Belgium a little. Simply put you have to know the address of where you are going depending wether or not its flemish or french. Sounds easy but the names are completely different. Very difficult in Bruxelles as Garmin decided it's all Flemish, when in fact Bruxelles is more "Bruxelles" than "Brussels", si vous voyer .....

SLight change of plan

P&O have a boat out of action and as a result our 18:00 ferry was cancelled. The annoying thing is P&O didn't make any attempt to contact us regarding this change, we only found out as one of our group contacted P&O regarding a change of vehicle and were informed that they were now on the 18:40 ferry. I called P&O and asked why we had been cancelled and what's more why they had not had the courtesy to inform us - I was told....get this "You have not been cancelled but rescheduled  and you would have been informed on arrival at the port" - How crap is that for customer service. Anyway I told them that 18:40 was too late and messed up our plans and as a result we are now on the 17:00 ferry. I also had to remind them that the 17:00 and 18:40 ferries were cheaper and we were all due a refund - a small item that they had conveniently forgot to mention. :spitfire
