Why would my bike be spitting oil from the exhaust?

No it's Castrol 10 w 40 GPS. I was told by Joe duffy's that thats what she takes.
It'll take a whole range of oils

My prefered is 20W50 IF i can get the correct grade which is getting more difficult so it tends to be 15W50 Semi Synth more often than not these days!

What I tend to "find" is the thinner the oil the higher usage with the big boxers AND the noisier the mechanical noises seem to be!!!

OVERGENEROUS . .

. .it is never a good idea to over fill a sump; the oil gets blown past the piston rings & builds up excess carbon in the combustion chambers.

for what it's worth...
i've always found with European Bikes if there's something major going wrong in there - you get at least some warning / unlike jap Bikes which can go bang with no warning.
:nenau
hardly scientific i know - but reassures me a little. :P

translation:

there's always some niggling little thing wrong with them that can later be interpreted as a warning of the inevitable catastrophe :D

You can tell he rides a Guzzi.....:augie:augie

Well lads.

Turns out that there is something wrong with her. But but I don't think it's related to this topic. As you all rightly said it must have been water with most likely a small bit of oil. It stoppd smoking and spitting after a few minute of riding but I drove her to Drogheda today and on the way back had to book her in with Joe Duffys. She's still chocking herself out in the high revs and miss firing. The throttle adjusters are rusted badly and she seems to be unbalanced when in the low revs and thicking over. They are not sure whats wrong but are going to look into it for me on Monday.

Fingers crossed it's nothing big. :(

aw feck. :(
not a good start to your ownership.
Good Luck and keep us posted.

I'll find out today and see if shes a twin or a single. Not sure at the minute. :blast

How would I know?

Given that your bike is '00 it's a single spark. Twin spark did not come in til late '02 or early '03. Will stand corrected on that.

When you ...

... 'serviced' it, did you raise the tank ? If so you may have dislodged the throttle cable on the right hand side, this will cause the rough running you are experiencing. See here for pictures !

What oil supplier are you using that doesn't stock 20w50?
