OK so please slap me on the head do what ever you want for creating such a painful thread.

i love them, ever since they appeared on the bike stand i was one 1st on the on in the BMW show in dublin. i wanted it yaddy yaddy etc etc.

was going fork out loads of cash buy new but finances held me back

but now with my dakar sold, my r850r sold and bike less bar my enduro i am ont he hunt again

to me the 800 is what one might call perfect. or should be bar soft suspender.

but i am drawn tot he 1150/1100gs due to its ability to travel for years and years and cover huge mongus miles.

so whats stopping a 2nd hand buyer from buy a 800gs

have read some of the horror stoies people had and it does put me of fbuying one.

and yes i know theat everyone only comes to the internet to complain about faults etc and thats why always seem so many of them

so let me see, chain failure, simple where is the DID and supersprox dealer thats 1 items sorted.

but collaped axels, eng failure, internals just eating away at each other . list goes on. so where do i stand? warranty, lets see bike goes otu fo warranty but engine blows, does bmw not have to fix this as it is NOT FIT FOR PURPOSE.

so i know not the best way to start buy pointing out its problems, but i have a very bad habbit of breaking every bike i own, so far i have managed to break the most reliable bikes, klr650, kle500 bmw 650 the list goes on. i maintain bikes ot highest std but luck is not on my side

so what do i look out for when buying, all eternal parts like tank cracks and chains easy spot, but are there any tell tale signs for internal issues

I bought mine secondhand, ex demo.
Yes they have had problems but after the last few years they should be sorted.
All bikes are prone to failure.
I just hope they have got to the status of the old airheads.

yes thats what i want, i know wishful thinking but an 800gs version of the old boxer for reliability

but seems that when 1 prob fixed then another one pops up all due to poor quaility checks

Just buy a tidy bike. If it's tidy, it's been cared for. If it's got corrosion, is dirty underneath, has got bent bits-n-pieces, etc, it hasn't been cared for. If it's been cared for it should be up to BMW spec, the rest is in the hands of BMW. Surely if an engine self-detonates 3 years after it came off the production line, it's not fit for purpose.

But, don't spend time solving problems that hasn't happened, or never will happen.

I recently bought an ex-demo GS, late 2010 model so hopefully! all the problems should be sorted. Buy as late a model as possible and ask if any of the common problems have appeared/been fixed.
All bikes can have problems and I traded in an early model F800S because of reliability issues and don`t ask about a Kawasaki Z250 I owned as a teenager!
If you can buy from a dealer with full history and warranty and get a test ride you will fall in love!! I did.

It's all bollox, all I hear about the 1200s is problems, would it stop me buying one? No because I know most bikes run fine for most people.

FWIW, my 800 has run fantastic since the day I bought it third hand, had a few recalls but all dealt with by Maddocks, other than that, it's never had a fault. It's a fantastic bike.

well just got a clean tidy 1150gs few mins ago so dream of have wait until loan is approved

reason why????? wife just rang said no more cash be blown on bikes so told either get 2nd hand or dont buy at all

fecking women but lets hope in summer finances will change

ya maybe need trade wife hahaha

ah least still lets me have 2 bikes, tourer and enduro

reason sold my beloved dakar was so 2 up be lot easier

typical

but whats 8-- 2 up like still want look at getting one before year out

the 11xx will always be better 2 up touring bikes as they are more roomy and just carry weight better than conventionally sprung bikes,

the 8s are really a one up bike, then you can bring out your inner hooligan:augie

if you want one , go indoors tell her just how the **** its going to be , then let us know what ward your in so we can take the piss and bring you grapes:D:D:D:D

I sold a a BSA Rocket Gold Star and my first missis wanted the money for a three piece suit ... she didn't last long after that ;)

The F800GS was much better two up than I expected :thumb
No appreciable loss of performance and didn't affect the handling. If you travel everywhere two up, I guess she's keeping her eyes on you  then get a good 1150, but for occasional two up use then the 800 is just fine :thumb

That's the way Chad ... that's the way to do it :thumb

well got to say one thing, the 1150 kills the 650 single. can get over the power and fact i was 1/4 throttle doing 80mph and 4k rpm.

but 800 just looks dogs bollox.

was told please by any bike so long as 2 of us can fit on it and ride comfortably. BUT... yes there is a BUT...any loan taken out cant affect the money going into house. crap. will have wait for few months till either change job or get pay rise

already have loan on the crf250x that never gets used

well just got a clean tidy 1150gs few mins ago

Good choice :beerjug: there a great bike :D All that torque, enjoy (I was gonna suggest the 1150 out of your earlier thinking if you pillioned with swmbo)

Micky's quote :blast "none of my wives" I,m still on the same model Hell 25 years this year for me this year I would have been out twice now for murder :D its about the give and take I give it she takes it.

Hi John

I've had an 1100 GS previously and had an 800 from new in '08. Covered about 7k on the 800 with no problems at all.

Loved the 1100, great bike, much more comfortable long distance or on the motorway, though I never liked the way the wind blast hit me mid section. Only had the standard screen though. You may struggle to find a low mileage 1100 now and there can be some expensive maintenance required, mine had 33k when it needed a whole series of repairs - brake-cylinder, brakelines, shaft-drive, and if I'd kept it further would have gone on to replace the suspension.

800 looks better, sounds better, considerably better fuel economy, both the 800 & the 1100 can cover 200 miles on a tank though the 1100 did it comfortably whereas on the 800 it's near to the knuckle. Windblast is most noticeable on the helmet causing alot of wind noise, I wear earplugs and have a quiet shuberth but still find it a bit on the noisy side. Seat is rock hard for a BM, fine for 2 hrs but gradually more painful beyond that, there are add-ons like the airhawk that other Tosser's seem impressed with. The engine is great, and handling is superb so it's considerably more fun on B-road blasts.

In short, for distance the 1100 pips it, for day to day fun the 800 is leagues ahead. Given the choice if you can afford the 800, go for it:D :thumb. Also, given the ever rising fuel costs the money you'll save with the 800 = more money to spend on the house:augie

With the 1150 you've already got a great bike, and more importantly, it's paid for, you can then save for another bike, can't have enough toys:thumb
