Widest Fixed Part?

Hello all. Not too technical this but I am (when funds allow shortly) in the market for (probably) a GS, either 1100 or 1150 but may have an accommodation problem. So my query is; what is the widest fixed part of the machine? Is it the engine and if so, I can't find overall dimensions for that. The prospective outhouse door is only 30.5 inches wide and I already know the bars are wider than that by about 6 inches but I'm assuming it is possible get them through one end at a time. I don't really want the bike to sleep out and my partner says no way is it coming in through the French windows into the kitchen. Advice (apart from dump the Mrs) welcome.

The bars are, unless you have panniers fitted

Yep. Like I say, I'm assuming I can wiggle the bars through one end at a time but if, say, the motor is more than 30 inches, I'm stuffed So if you wouldn't mind..........

1150 is roughly 28" wide at the cylinders, more with crashbars.

Handlebars are roughly 36"

The bikes bars fitted with grip covers will fit through a 36 inch gap "just"
Fitted with panniers its a no go, I had to make bigger doors for the bike shed.
46 inch now to allow my mates K 1200 LT in.
OK just measured the bars at 36inch and the panniers will need 40 inch to pass cleanly with a "little" room to spare

Thanks guys. I don't think it's going to be a deal breaker but I can't easily widen the door in the building because it is brick built. A few hours with a Stihl Saw and new wider lintel, 3x3, new door, cement render etc etc would see it off but quite frankly ICBA so if it wont go it's gonna have to be the Mother in Law's garage a few miles away. Better that than no bike. BTW the guy at BMW dealership doesn't hold out much hope for me getting something worthwhile within my 3 to 4K budget but it won't stop me trying

you'd get a very nice 1100, possibly an early 1150 here for that money.

Well last year my 2000 bike cost me just over 4K with 30 odd K and full service history on it from a non bmw dealer so its not impossible.

My GSA does, permanently....3 years now...still on the same battery (though it did let me down the other day after 3 weeks of not being used) and no optimate.......just use a decent coating in the winter and wash it off in the summer

Investa hundred quid in a decent ground anchor and a bag of cement and chain the fekker up......

k. I hear what you're saying but I'm just a softie and like to molly coddle inanimate objects (as well as animate ones) Also, pennies are so hard to come by that a lil reassurance with warranty etc will help me sleep nights. Anal me? Er, I guess so.

I have a similar problem right now.... A dry stone wall that stops our bikes being parked in the back of our homestead.......

The wall is going to be altered in the not too distant future, then it's the usual GS'er shed building. That will be another thread for hear though I'm sure "What size shed to house these: 1100, 1150 & 650 GS's"

Make the adjustments to the property, a GS is for life
