Good luck to them all. It's one of the most challenging races imagineable. In my dreams, if I were younger, it I were a better rider etc, etc, etc, I might dream of giving it a go. In the real world I know I couldn't do it. Any sport capable of claiming the life of the late great John Deacon deserves our respect. Simon told me how difficult his first few privateer attempts were. Own spannering, minimal sleep etc. He's paid his dues big time. Best of luck to all the competitors Charlie included.

Probably it makes me spit so much, here was me thinking this could be interesting see a bit of USA but what a , what could have been a good series ruined. At least Charlie & Ewan where entertaining and did not behave like spoiled brats.

HAve you seen the listings of starters!! someone is riding a V-ROD!!!!!

Now that's a hero!

I really cannot believe the attitude of some of the correspondents, they must be Sun readers or jornos, always knock any body who is succesfull, or has a go (especially if they brits) please grow up. Armchair Critics

I agree anybody doing the Dakar has balls, but surely the Boorman ride is a bit of a cop out, being chaperoned by Pavey/Hall.

Makes a mockery though, out of one of motorsports true challenges.

There are many more UK off road riders of greater skill who can't do it because of the cost and Boorman gets a paid ride, because of the BMW marketing machine

Having seen him at talks/events etc he comes across as arrogant and last night I watched Episode 1 of the LWR again, in which he seemed like a spoiled brat.

What would any of us have given to do the LWR, with that sort of support.

Had you heard of Boorman before LWR............seriously??

He has shot to prominence on the back of his friend, Mcgregor - because he was an A list celebrity.

Other the other hand, Mcgregor came across as grateful for all the support rec'd and was truly humbled. He seemed the better of the pairing and hasn't needed to get on the BMW marketing machine, since the LWR - because he went back to his acting career.

Has Boorman acted since the LWR??

The true heroes of the Dakar are the KTM teams, Brit riders Plumb, Patsy Quick, Mick Extance and Clive Town - who have earned their sponsorship/support to ride on their own merits and ability to ride and I'll cheer them on all the way........because they are racing to win, not to just to finish

vote YES

He is a riding GOD.. and i have his autograph...........................for sale

Although it would seem that a few of the competitors and followers of "The Dakar" are resentfull of Charlie "competing" in this years Dakar, it should be appreciated that any TV coverage in this country has only to be for the good. So I hope that he does indeed finish.

In this country we only get a minimal amount on Eurosport, so when Sky eventually show it as a documentary series, my guess is that will only help increase interest in this sport.

Anyone, regardless of skill or not, has my respect in participating in what has got to be the ultimate sporting challenge of machine and man or woman.

I feel sorry for the DAF Dutch truck team that were excluded due to document anomalies before the start. :(

No mention of the "Race to Dakar" team on Eurosport this evening, but Nick Plum, Patsy Quick and Mick Extance got one.

Good luck to everyone in this years Dakar.

Nice link on Advrider, if you are interested...

Try the tracking playback for up to four racers...neat, especially cars / trucks against the bikes. (For example, try replaying Sainz against Charlie / Pavey) You'll soon see what I mean.
As for Charlie, I wish him luck...good luck to them all, brave men and women, machinery against the elements.

It's a done deal !!!!!

Let's get real here. With all the support mechanism how can he fail? He even has the dedicated technical and psychological support of ukgser stalwarts to aid an' abet his efforts. As I said done deal!!!

I say goodluck to him

I think he will have to finish it, just think of all the money he and Rus can make from selling the DVD's and books, the waiting for next Christmas and selling and extended version of the DVD

im backing him to finish anyone who can do the longway round can do the dackar ,hope he proves you all wrong

I met him at the sydney bike show - seems like a decent enough bloke.

Much like anyone else - who'd jump at the chance of all this attention and support from BMW.

Lets not Forget - its probably BMW's idea and money to provide them with more market awareness from the publicity of a 'celebrity' who can actually use their equipment almost as its intended.
Boorman must be almost perfect - having the name and the time to give - not having a real job to do like acting :mmmm

Joe public doesn't care who plumb and pavey are - but they now know the boorman name thru McGregor.

He may or may not finish - but good luck to him
