Hi all, I know this is a well discussed topic, but I've already done the usual thing and fitted a taller screen but it's no better, so here I am.

So, prior to the GS I had a 2016 Triumph Explorer with a standard screen, in it's highest position it was lovely, no buffeting just a little bit of wind over the top. If I ducked a little it was almost like being inside a car. I expect the GSA to be similar but thats not been the case.

The day I picked it up I had a 2 hour motorway journey home and even in it's highest position I could feel alot of buffeting on my neck, shoulder and my head. My friend who came with me even commented that I was "bobbing" side to side alot.

Since then I've tried the screen at it's lowest, highest, in the middle and it makes very little improvement. I'm 6'2 so not mega tall and a few people I spoke to even the dealer all laughed when I commented how bad the buffeting is. They even acted surprised and like I might even be making it up.

Some other GS owners said, taller screen, with a deflector doodah, so off I went and got the Puig touring screen with the winglet thingymajig. This has slightly (and I stress slightly) reduced the wind buffeting on my shoulders but it's now created a nasty resonance on my helmet (Shoei Neotec) that vibrates my head so badly it blurs the speedo out slightly.

I've played with the height of the screen obviously and also the height/angle of the winglet and nothing improves it. I rode sports bikes for years and while the amount of wind was higher, the buffeting has never been this bad.

Dropped my bike off today at Williams to have more warranty work done and they gave me a GS750 with a tiny little fly screen on it. No buffeting at all, not even slighly. Obviously theres more air hitting me, but its a predictable and constant stream of air. My GSA causes so much buffeting and vibration on my helmet it's unreal. In terms of helmet noise the GS750 was far quieter to ride at motorway speeds.

Obviously I'm not looking for total calm and quiet, it's a bike afterall, but the noise/buffeting/resonance is shocking. So apart from the screen, does anyone have any bright ideas? Other than wearing a neck brace of course haha

Shorten your legs and become 5'8 and all will be good .

Very often the turbulence and buffeting you are experiencing is the turbulent air behind the screen

As the bike moves forward the screen creates a sort of vacuum behind it or a vortex or call it what you will and that air is very turbulent and swirls around trying to escape the void

I have found that a shorter screen prevents this. Head and shoulders in clean air with just enough screen to deflect the worst

There used to be things called tobinators and in effect they were a spacer to allow air to actually get behind the screen and prevent the void/vacuum/ vortex

Do me a favour

take the screen off entirely and go for a ride and see if that helps if so you know the answer

Did the buffetting get worse when you were in traffic on that motorway journey, as you were passing vans and lorries?

I had similar problems with my crosstourer bought a £20 screen deflector extender thingy off ebay ,problem solved and a couple of my friends put one on there bikes thumbs up all round :beerjug:My mate rides a 2016 gs 1200 wearing a neotec and hates the helmet, says its the noisiest helmet hes ever owned:beerjug:

Ask dealer to loan you a rallye screen, it is smaller and very good.

In winter I use a GSA screen with an MRA X-Creen on top. In summer I use a tiny Puig screen. Both work really well.

Every inch makes a difference.
I am 6’4 and the standard screen was no good for me so I bought a MRA screen with top attachment. It was a lot better but still not great. My mate, who is 6’2 rode it with this screen and thought it was perfect!
I then bought a Puig extended screen and attached a cheap Chinese extender section and now it is great. My mate tried this and found it not as good for him as the MRA screen. MRA screen now bank in its box!
So every inch matters!

Some of those screen extensions are huge! I’m sure the solution is out there.

Tthat's the very one I bought done the Job for me

That's me.

Puig touring. See over the top on lowest setting, so good for filtering and no need for earplugs. Wind it up if it's pissing for extra protection - but std for when it's hot. Might try one of those Puig shorties for hotter times.

You’ve already answered your own question, in the OP. Get a smaller screen. I actually found the BMW screens very good on my bikes, but on every bike since, I’ve fitted smaller screens.

Go smaller and it will sort itself out, I wish people would stop with the barn door and spoiler on a spoiler on a spoiler on a spoiler approach. I fitted a VStream Sports screen to my GSA, and I don't get any buffeting, my lid is in clean air and it's far less tiresome than buffeting.

I'm tosser sized and a shade over 6' tall.

The only way to 100% guarantee that you won't get any buffeting is to ride without a screen, I've had loads of GS and GSA's over the years and the first thing I do when getting them home is remove the screen. Increased pressure at motorway speeds of course but you soon get used to it.
