I've a shortcut has come up on my laptop to download windows 10 for free. I'm currently using windows 7 and I got my daughter a laptop last year which uses windows 8 and don't like it at all. Any-one any views on 10 and should I download it?

This is just pre-registration for when it is released (29th July). Windows 10 is only currently available to those on the Windows 10 Technical Preview program.
It is a big improvement over Windows 8/8.1. It has been made far more adaptable and can be changed to suite the type of device it is being run on. It is much more like Windows 7 when run on desktop/laptops and has a tablet mode for more mobile devices. I like it very much and am using it on two of my devices.

I'm hanging on to 7 a while longer The new system will be free for a year so no rush

I'm on the Windows 10 Technical Preview program and it's been very good so far.

You only join it from the correct Microsoft site if you are registered with Microsoft. What you've seen might not be a genuine Microsoft Windows 10 link!!!

Thanks guys, when I clicked on more info it said that 10 was compatible with my machine but that Bluetooth and wireless apps weren't compatible. Not much use then. I think i will wait.

Sounds like a dodgy link. There have been no issues with Bluetooth or Wireless apps with Windows 10 preview that I've found and I've been using it since the first available preview build☺

I refuse to upgrade Windows OS until at least service pack 2. Let other folk pull their hair out for a year.

No it's not a dodgy link. It's the new Windows 10 pre-registration tool that is being added to all Win 7/8 machines as a Microsoft update (KB3035583). The reference to non-complient bluetooth in the compatability test is almost universal and will be down to OEMs not having updated their drivers for Windows 10 yet.

If by shortcut the OP means that he has got this button that's explained here - http://www.independent.co.uk/life-s...rs-whether-users-like-it-or-not-10289728.html
That's fair enough and you are correct M B. As before, just make sure what you are following is a genuine Microsoft link/button.

Recently I've cleaned up and restored one friends home office PC and his Laptop and another friends Laptop, they used non genuine Windows 10 links and ended up still running on 8.1 with their Browsers being hijacked and their PC connection being diverted!

Anyone done this free upgrade yet?

I keep on having a little sniff, but get scared and run away!

What will I lose that I have to pay to get back again?

..... I don't want a MAC by the way! ;)

You should not lose anything, I'd not do the upgrade without a backup of my data though.

I don't think you need to hold off (as is the norm) for SP1 / SP2 of Windows 10 either. I was the project lead deploying it out to a University in Scotland on an early adoption program to the techies and the feedback has been positive all the way.

What we have to hope for is that all of the Hardware Vendors have their ducks lined up, Intel, Nvidia, AMD Etc and have got all of their respective drivers etc ready to go, the SDK / DDK has been available to them for over a year now, so it should be fine.

I'm really looking forward to it, as when it hit's general release I've got 2 clients pulling the trigger straight away on over 50k workstations in their organisations, and I've been developing the builds for them with SCCM.

Thanks for your vote of confidence! :thumby:

I have confirmed my interest of 10 with Bill and the boys and await their new operating system ... even though 7 has just had the latest 15 updates installed. :blast

I still have a Lenovo desktop with Vista, so you understand I am bitter and suspicious of change. :comfort

I'm now on the Windows 10 pro Insider Build 10166. I had a minor issue with the last build but didn't lose anything. 10166 is also working fine with my old Office Pro 2005 Software suite. Also syncing with Android phone and programs open just by asking Cortana :D

Update to new build yesterday, glitches with microphone etc sorted and the new Edge Browser is fast and pretty cool with the write on the screen feature

Got the offer to upgrade to W10 on the 29th currently running W7 not sure if i will take the option immediately,
there is also an option to upgrade other devices such as my phone which is W8 will it be worth doing?

So I just caught an advert for w10, not sure if the marketing dept. understand the term window licker? Anyone upgraded to the GA then?

I have just upgraded to 10 in the last hour & WOW is all I can say!

Installation took about an hour, but went smooth as silk with no glitches at all.

Everything is back as it should be (one little pop up that said Dell stage requires windows 7) but apart from that fired up and connected up no problem.

I'm going to give the new Microsoft Edge browser and home page a go, as I use my outlook email more than yahoo now & was getting tired of the dumbed down shite on their home page anyhow.

All looks so fresh & crisp compared to 7, a really good upgrade is my initial impression.

A UKGSER thumbs up from me! :thumby:

edit: Browsing web pages is far quicker now, even with my shite connection speed. :beerjug:
