Windows 10

As you set the upgrade up simply don't choose express setup. If you choose the custom setup it asks you very clearly what you do and don't want to be installed and what information you want to give them.

Thanks, Marki, I'll do that!

Btw, did anybody have a problem with outlook, like Kenny? I'm considering getting a back-up e-mail address before installing Windows 10, because my e-mails are very important to me and I don't want to loose anything. I had a look around, and found out that 1&1 offers e-mail accounts with automatic sychronization. Can anybody recommend any other providers?

Google apps especially if you have an android phone. Similar to Gmail but paid for and you have your own email address. Outlook not needed in fact your better off without it. If you have to use outlook then look at Microsoft's office 365. The general imap or pop3 email should die in a hideous way. It's ancient and featureless.

Went to 10 on one of my desktop PCs and it all looked good so did same on second desktop plus laptop. Only issues I have had is that Bing still seems to pop up even when Google is set as default search engine. I have added a couple of Chrome extensions (Bing2google, Chrometana) so hopefully that's fixed.

File/ printer sharing is switched off by default on W10 but, even having turned it on, I can't print wirelessly from my laptop to a USB connected printer on my deskto PC. Any ideas gratefully received: Google hasn't helped so far.

I have an ageing USB Brother Multifunction printer and now have it routed through a LogiLink Print Server (about €20 on eBay). That allows me to print via WiFi from my Windows 10 Laptop.

I just converted a Dell Studio 1557 Laptop to Win10 from Win7 and that went OK, although Win10 did delete some older apps which were incompatible. Most irritating thing is with Firefox, which keeps bring up AVG as the default home page, although I set it otherwise. Will be deleting AVG shortly and installing McAfee (for which I have a 1 year free subscripion with my newer Dell Inspiron Laptop).

I use Firefox & AVG. I think Firefox can revert to an AVG Home page when Firefox and/or AVG are updated (I recall that has happened a few times). My normal Firefox homepage pops up no problem on WIndows 10. I have the professional version of AVG. I used McAfee once and hated it. It slowed the PC and was very intrusive with messages popping up all over the place. It seemed to be constantly seeking my approval for the job it was doing: drove me nuts. In fairness, that was a few years ago: things may have changed.

My Desktop (USB connected) printer was simply set up as "Shared" on Wndows 7 so my laptop (which connects to the same Wireless LAN as the desktop) could use it (when the desktop PC is switched on, of course). This has stopped working which is a bit annoying but wouldn't cause me to revert to Windows 7.

Afterthought: this could be completely unrelated to W10 update but I have just used Garmin Express to update my PC and 2x Zumo 660s. The update went through without a hitch and all done in one evening. This is unprecedented!

Sorted.

Network-Desktop PC...shows printer then "Connect to Printer" installs necessary driver on laptop (presumably new for W10). I probably did something similar on W7 but I had forgotten. So...for WIndows 10...so far so good.

Good luck with mcafee I wouldn't wish that on anyone!

Yes, it will be a trial I think. These heavy weight virus checkers (McAfee, Norton, etc.) can really sap the PC's performance. It can be loaded onto my phone as well so will see how that goes. May try deinstalling and reinstalling Firefox as it can be slow sometimes, though I did already reset it.

Another very happy upgrader here......

I bought a single PC activation code from Ebay for Win 8.1, (about 12 and a half quid :clap) mounted the ISO and installed it, no probs, though I didn't bother playing with or even updating 8.1 as I've used with it on another machine and fucking hated it.
So I went to the W10 update site, created another ISO (on a USB stick and on DVD just in case) and updated from the ISO on a spare drive......20 mins later, it was done.....amazingly smooth for a new OS install :D

I'm instantly at home with W10.......ok, there are some differences but finding stuff is intuitive rather than fricking frustrating like it is with 8.1

It's recognised and installed nearly every device I run.....Logitech 430 headphones, several USB hubs and a PCI SATA expansion card from which I hang three old HDs in addition to the MB controlled ones (8TB yayyy!) .......I've had to reinstall the Logitech gameware for my MMO G600 mouse but I was expecting that.

The only thing W10 doesn't like is my Madcatz S.T.R.I.K.E 7 keyboard, which was a bit of an issue 'cos I use it as a clock, app launcher, sound controller and I run a bunch of macros on it......I've just got it working properly though by reinstalling the W7 in compatibility mode as Admin, and I have my profiles, app launchers and everything else back :D

W10 even recognised my three screens and set them up properly, although I had to use Nvidia control panel to place them in the correct location and designate the primary screen (47 inches of 1080p gorgeousness!)

Now I'm going to play with Cortana, but I doubt I'll actually be using her much......I like the Zen silence of decent headphones and a top KB input too much to be talking to an imaginary AI friend ;)

Nerd.

My sons brand new laptop keeps freezing, the cursor won't move and we have to power off and back on. It happens mostly when he's playing Minecraft game. I upgraded it from the start from W8 to W10, but I've heard of others having similar freezing issues with W10.

Any suggestions on how to rectify this. Should I revert back to W8?

If it's mostly when playing games I would say look for some new graphics drivers. Graphics drivers are always the bug bear of new windows versions. Vista although not good had horrific issues with them. A clean install instead of an upgrade might sort it out as well. That laptop has bags of ram but the rest of it isn't stellar unfortunately.

that, and check you have the latest version of Java installed....double check that you have the right version as well.....you'll need the 64bit version, not the 32.

I'd recommend NINITE.COM for updating and keeping all the essentials sorted out :) (I did a thread about that site a week or three back)

Thanks, I'm out of touch with Windows as I use a Mac, so how do I go about checking the Java version and upgrading the graphic drivers? I find W10 a bit of a pig to navigate around.

Go to java.com and use the checker.

In the search type device manager. Open that and look for the graphics card. Right click it and properties then driver. You can try the update driver button but probably better taking a note of the model and driver version then Google windows 10 "graphics model" drivers. See if there is anything newer.
