My partners son has gone and bought a Samsung laptop off ebay, it is supposed to be loaded with Win 7, Home premium. There is a disc in it but it is a Samsung Win 7 recovery disc. When the lappy is booted it states 'no OS' The laptop has a key on the base (official looking sticker).
I've been told I need to get hold of a copy of Win 7 Home Premium, load it and when asked for the key use the one supplied on the lappy, its a registered key so isn't infringing on any copyright issues.
Is this correct and does anyone know where i can get a disc from? I've looked on ebay and its either recovery discs or full blown package that has a new key with it which i don't need

I told him to get back in touch with the person he purchased it from but I may as well speak to the preverbal brick wall :blast

can he not boot from the recovery disc?

No it won't do it, it errors with some files not found, I assumed it needs an operating system installed to recover to (as you can tell i'm not up to speed with this sort of thing, assumed it would be an easy fix :blast They never are)

Windows is loading files
I've just tried booting it again with the recovery disc inserted:

Starting windows
Then an option to select language
Then 'Install Now
set up starting
Then option to accept licence agreement
Type of installation - Upgrade or Custom (upgrade only available when existing version of Win is running) chose Custom
Load drivers - Then says to install the device driver insert installation media containing driver files and click OK
No device drivers were found. Make sure the installationn media contains correct drivers
It then gives you an option to browse either CD or boot X which has folders Prog Files, Sources, Users, Windows

Some info is shown in what looks like Chinese writing, I think he's been sold a dudd here :blast

its not all lost

download linux mint 13 iso file - burn to cd using imgburn - reboot with it in and it'll work perfectly.

job done

I have a samsung, When the Computer first boots, do you get an option for F8, this would take you an option to reset to factory default, or repair instalation, If not then the previous owner may have wiped the C:drive along with the partitioned drive that would allow you to reload,

On start up it shows f2 - Set Up, f4 - recovery, pressing f4 has no effect......

Looks like its gonna be an expensive doorstop
(Shouldn't have bought it off ebay)

I'm sure somewhere i have a backup of Win7 Premium. If you PM me to remind me i'll have a look and send you a copy (if i can find it) :)

If it's not as described in the ebay ad, email the seller about your problem, if he doesn't agree to take it back for a full refund, open a case in the resolution centre. Bit laborious, but normally gets your money back unless the seller does a runner.

What you need, I suspect, is not Windows 7, but the Samsung specific driver files that were in the recovery partition that Mr Numpty deleted.

That sounds about right, the other thing i need is more knowledge on how these things fit together :blast

Basic and probably stupid question, If i get hold of a w7 disc, will it load from disc with any default drivers? Or are these somewhere within the firmware? (that Numpty possibly deleted)

Yes, it probably will, but you might find the Windows serial number on the machine is specific to an OEM version of Windows, and will not work with the generic retail version of Windows. Manufacturers tend to have slightly tweaked versions of Windows with their own drivers, hence the restore partition on the disk. You might find drivers on the Samsung site if the Windows you obtain will work with your serial number, you need to download these onto a USB stick if lucky, and a CD if not, switch CDs when asked for drivers.

Never simple with OEM kit.

if you have a originalcode then down load it off the net then input your original code

I have a Win7 Disk that I could send you, but as above it may or maynot work with the serial Number on the back of your Unit, ie OEM,
The other option would be to try and Claim it back throu Ebay,

Windows serials are not checksum specific.
Apart from the few stripped out versions, any version will have the generic drivers (and almost certainly for a company like Samsung, the specific drivers) for the hardware.

Buz, get yourself onto Kickasstorrents*dot*com and look up W7 Install.....make sure you get a 32 or 64 bit version depending on what the laptop operates on (32 I think) and download it.

follow the instructions, or use DAEMON tools lite (free) to mount the downloaded file as a virtual DVD (instructions come with the DL of Daemontools) then install it from there.

Use of the W7 ISO image without a license is of course illegal, but as you have a license number, as long as you get the same version, you are ok.

You don't need to send this brick back......it's a software problem, not a hardware one :thumb2

i only have dell and HP isos of win 7

you could just install a "normal" version of win 7 then go to the samsung site for drivers and apps
