i was recently put onto this website :

www.software4students.co.uk

this is completely above board and i have just got my copy of windows 7 ultimate "upgrade" for £62 instead of £170
granted you have to "select" which college / university you are at but that is all it asks. no checks, etc etc.
so if you want to save a fair few quid there is loads of new software for sale at extremely low prices.
hope this saves a few of you some hard earned :thumb2

Numpty question, how do you work out if you need a 32 or 64 bit upgrade?:comfort

Depends on the processor on your computer. If it's a 64 bit one you'll probably see a 64 sticker on it somewhere.
If you're not sure then the 32bit vesrsion will work on the 64 machine, but you won't get the benefits.

click on "system information" and it will tell you what your pc is, plus what software you are running.
if it is XP it is probably 32 bit, if vista most people run 32bit also.
you would know if it was 64 bit as you would remember trying hard to find most the drivers etc etc.
if it was shop bought pc then 99% it will be 32 bit mate

Have you actually upgraded yet? I was under the impression that you could only upgrade like for like as in vista home premium to windows 7 home premium but not vista home premium to windows 7 ultimate.

Find out if your PC can run Windows 7

To see if your PC is ready for Windows 7, download the free Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor. It scans your PC for potential issues with your hardware, devices, and installed programs, and recommends what to do before you upgrade.

The Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor checks for compatibility issues.

If your PC can run Windows Vista, it can probably run Windows 7, but it's still a good idea to use the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor.
Note: Information about your PC will be sent to Microsoft, but no information will be used to identify or contact you. For more information, read the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor privacy statement.
Before you begin-
Before scanning your PC with the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor, be sure to plug in and power on any USB devices or other devices, such as printers, external hard disks, and scanners, that you regularly use with the PC you're checking.

Cheap Win7 Pro Upgrade

If you have a student e-mail address or access to one then you can get Windows 7 Home Premium or Windows 7 Professional either for £30.00 and Office Ultimate 2007 for £38.95.

These are the Win7 upgrade packs but digitalriver have released the full iso's for 32bit (X86) and 64bit (X64) Win7 due to upgrade difficulties so that people can do clean installs if you have purchased a licence on line.

Digital river iso downloads at bottom of page, also includes Ultimate.

I hope this is of help :)

Photoshop pricing is interesting. Can't seem to find any AutoCAD or similar.

Is there any catch buying these (Limited licence period etc?)

There is always one :D

Kirk let us know if that upgrades ok, I work a lot with MS licensing at work and you simply shouldn't be able to do it but what MS says and what they physically restrict you from doing is very often two different things.

mate it is 100%ok.
when the disc boots up it asks if you want to upgrade or custom install.
as i was running xp i could only use the clean instal option, so having already backed my files up and partitioned the drive i chose this option.
the best thing about W7 is when it had finished installing, on restarting it places a folder in your programme files called........"old windows"...
so all your pics, music etc etc are saved...brilliant touch i thought.
but ceratinly no instal probs, everything running as it should do.
registered, downloaded all updates etc etc fine.

It's a case of correct tool for the job. Linux is a good, stable and well supported O/S and Ubuntu is one of the (if not the) best end user friendly installations out there, but it won't run what I want to run and therefore not likely to get much use here. I do have a linux based server (well, a virtual one under VMWare) but that's just for web/mail server services.
