Is there any difference between "restart" and switching the PC on and off.

I only ask, as my pc was slowing up today whilst on the internet, so I used restart
a couple of times, with no improvement at all, however after switching off for a minute then firing it up again all was well again!! :(

Restart does a soft boot and pulling the plug out forces it to boot from scratch or hard boot...

How about a defrag or make your internet temp space bigger.. or buy a new computer with XP so that your defunct and out of date operating system can't hold your surfing back?

The only difference I know of between shut down and restart is that shutting down and leaving for about 30 seconds allows the RAM memory charge to dissipate. When you restart there is not enough time for the charge to dissipate. Can sometimes make a difference if there is a problem. Slowing down is more likely to be caused by programs running/downloading in the background eg virus protection :)

Thanks for that!

Now the time and date settings have decided to reset themselves??? Might be the start of the slippery slope to the local computer shop i feel!

One question though, If my engraving machine needs to run from Windows 98, could I get a PC built with two hard drives, one with 98 on from which i'd run the machines, and one hard drive with XP for surfing etc? or would that get too complicated for a numpty like me?
