One for the glaziers amongst us, in the last week I have had 4 windows pc's brought to me because they dont work :comfort. Any way they have all presented the same boot failure; power on - bios - then stall on windows start up with black screen and a working mouse pointer (even if left for hours they remain the same) have tried safe mode :(. They all work when booted from usb stick with mini xp. When the hdd was removed and connected to other machine for virus/ malware scan etc nothing has come up. Any one got any suggestions I would like to fix it rather than reinstal Like I have done on the previous 3.

Have you tried a repair from installation media rather than a full on re-install?

Personally if it was me though I'd be backing up whatever needs keeping off the hard drive and doing a full re-install anyway. I often find that when a computer has reached these sorts of levels of non-function it's just easier in the long run to wipe the lot and start again from fresh.
Even if you did manage to get it booting correctly again in it's current state there may well be other issues that would need resolving in the not too distant future.
At least with a re-install you can be 100% confident that the system is leaving you in a fully error free working state :)

The first 3 had a full fresh reinstall update etc etc etc. Not figured anythig out about the win7 either  so that has had a system restore from its preinstalled recovery program. I dare say it will be back in a few weeks and I will format it and eradicate any sign of the HP software on it :thumb It struck me as a little odd that I got 4 machine with 3 diferent editions of windows failing in what appeared to be the same way in a week. Probably coincidence :duno
