preparing to standby. Recently my computer, running XP, has displayed this message on screen and nothing on the keyboard has any effect as far as I can tell. Does'nt seem to be any rhyme nor reason for it. The computer is on 24 hrs a day and it will sometimes be a week or so before it does this even tho' it's used every day. The only way I can get control again is to switch off and on again. Is there any reason why it's doing this and can I recover it wthout swiching off? Any help gratefully recieved'

I'd make my first check in the "Power saving" settings in control panel.

Looked at my settings and nothing is changed from when first set up. so still none the wiser. What does the system do when it goes to 'preparing to standbye'?

Microsoft sites suggest this is a driver conflict. Possibly graphics card or sound card driver. Seems NERO is especial problem. Try looking here http://support.microsoft.com/kb/331506

Thanks, Exeter Lad. That sounds exactly like my symptoms. Don't have Nero installed so must be something else. It's going to Cp world for an annual health check next month so I'll let them sort it!!
