Windows / Mac Word

I currently have a Windows, running 7HP, laptop, but intend buying a Mac in the near future and need a pointer from those in the know.
I'm wanting to create written docs , which I would usually do with Microsoft Word. As this won't be compatible with Mac (?) then I need advice as to which format I should write in. Are there any compatible doc formats that both users can utilise or do I need to wait until I get the Mac, or can I use MW and use a programme at a later date to convert it to Mac compatibility?

Current formats on my lappy are:-

Microsoft Word
Journal Document
Text Document

A Google search reveals that a Mac Word prog is compatible with Win '97 .... but beyond Win '97?

In my office everyone else uses windows o/s, I use an iMac with Microsoft office for MAC, the only programme they have and I don't is MS Access

Word, Excel and Powerpoint are completely interchangeable. Some Fonts are different, but there are equivalents and all the standard ones are exactly the same.

Apple computers are great and I suffer far less than my staff with both hardware and software problems.

Been running MS office for yeas on my macs, works great and files created are cross platform compatible.

Schtum, your link appeared to point at recurring monthly costs, which is not my ideal choice. It could be that I haven't read it all properly but as my internet is so slow , bordering on 'stop' right now, I feel a quicker answer might be achieved here!

Pages is a good WP, but I'm not sure its a genuine replacement for Word, certainly not for complex documents.

If your employer is in the scheme like mine was, it cost me only £8.95 for the Office suite, though the latest version available anywhere for Mac is 2011. If your employer isn't in the scheme, find a friend who can help. You only need to send an e-mail from that employer, to get access to the 'product key' to activate the download. Who then uses the 'key' doesn't matter.

Note however, if you buy Mac version through this offer, you cannot buy a windows version later as I tried to... just find a new friend and start over!

Having recently made the move to Mac I bought the Microsoft Offic 2011 pack and it's brilliant, I actually find the functionality better than on my Windows PC at work (it seems the interface is less 'dumbed down'?).

The only issue I have is that we run Word 2007 at work and if I set up a flash document at home with tricky formatting, images and unusual fonts it often goes to pot when transferred to a work computer.

Not all fonts are the same between Mac and Win, but keep to the usual (font) suspects and it will be fine.
