I've finally splashed out on a laptop (Dell) which, of course, now comes with Vista.
So, a couple of questions;
Are the firewall and windows defender (spyware) any good?

or is it better to install, AVG, Zone Alarm and Spy Sweeper.

any other tips, apart from the obvious....buy a Mac :D

non-techie answer

Vista seems strange at first, but you soon get used to it.

The latest version of Word and Excel on the other hand are still confusing - and the default file types are not compatible with older versions, would you believe.

I think I would still opt for a 2 year license for AVG Internet Security.......... (and have)

I'm in the same boat! Mine came with Norton, which I took off immediately. I have installed AVG with no issues, but when I tired to install ZoneAlarm Pro, it kept throwing up TrueVector faults and trying to repair them. I trolled through the forums and it appears that this issue only appears with ZoneAlarm Pro on Vista, but the standard (free) ZoneAlarm isn't affected.

The only tips I can pass on at the mo, apart from having at least 2Gb of ram, is to use the Windows Classic view and not the resource hungry Aero themes.

thanks for that. :thumb

One of the guys at work has mentioned the thing about Aero and I've rammed as much ram in as possible, 4gb.:thumb2
so here goes

AVG or Avast for your A/V.

I like the Comodo Firewall But don't activate the Defense+ on it. Zone Alarm seems to let the true Vector eat up so many resources.

I also use AdAware 2007, Spybot S&D, SUPERAntispyware and Spyware Terminator all free and the last one gives real time protection also.:thumb2

Sorry - slight hi-jack . . .

How do I turn the effin' Narrator OFF?

Somehow turned it ON when I got the PC so it comes on with every start up, but just cannot find the OFF instruction. :blast

And I am PC literate, honest.

ps - thanks for all these security pointers

I use a Dell Latitude D630 with Vista for work - I have a couple of Gig of RAM and it is fine with the Aero theme, in fact it is quite a nice box. The Vista Firewall is no longer a packet filter and actaully seems to work quite well, Defender however seems to be quite limited on the grounds that I usually keep a few hundred malware samples on my boxes and it is yet to detect any.
