Just upgraded to Windose 8.1 and IE11.

They don't work well together! Stick with XP.

its about time XP was given the boot, too long in the tooth.

luckily for me there are still 1000's of users, who are going to get hacked, so more work for me.

its going to get interesting for the banks too. no security updates means no compliance. Like to see them try and pin fraud on their clients now!!

I still use it exclusively. OK so I work in an industrial environment, where much of the equipment is years old and needs DOS compatability.
Problem is, every time I try the upgraded versions of microsoft's operating system, the computers concerned run like slugs.
Vista makes you vomit.
7 was reasonable and fairly bug free, but quite slow.
8 do I have to comment?
No, Xp is still fast, works well and is compatible with everything I do. OK, it doesn't have all the bells and whistles of the later bling, but I do not need them anyway.
Security?
The best security is commonsense.

I have Vista premium at home and win & at work - both are very similar now.

All available quite freely these days...


However, Linux mint is the dogs danglies of free if you want to go down that route.

Hey Noddy, give your old XP machine new lease of life by installing Ubuntu. It's a free Linux os that comes with Libre Office pre installed and loads more free stuff is available in the software centre. You will be surprised at how well your old machine can run.

My future son in law had a laptop with Vista that was so slow as to be unusable. I upgraded it to XP and it ran streets better. I suggested that he consider Linux Ubuntu which was subsequently installed and resulted in an even bigger jump in actual performance than the change from Vista to XP.

If my commercial software didn't need MicroShite I'd be running Linux on my business machines.

Our Windows XP PC is incredibly slow and we've done the usual thing of clearing out old files and old images and nothing made much difference. I've been advised to upload Windoes 7 or 8.

I've run XP for years with no real problems.

I don't really want to upgrade just yet, but if I have to I will chuck Windows and get a Mac.

However I do all my banking online at the moment, with Bullguard Firewall and antivirus software.

Can someone answer me this -- will Bullguard offer adequate protection once the XP updates cease? Or has the time come to say bye-bye?

I think the best way to improve performance with any windows machine is to re install it once per year, that 'll clear all the shite out.

You're not wrong. I've had startling improvements in performance from pretty antiquated machines just by starting over.
